Kerala State Electricity Board Limited plans to establish 207 fast-charging stations across Kerala within one year, expanding access. The proposed KSEB Fast EV Charging Stations are expected to deliver a full charge to compatible electric cars in around 20 minutes, cutting journey delays.
KSEB has invited a tender to install 207 fast-charging stations statewide. According to KSEB director (generation) M. P. Rajan, the tender process is expected to be finalized within two months. The network will reportedly include 60 kW chargers, more powerful 120 kW units and super-fast 240 kW chargers.
More Than Just Charging Points
KSEB wants the charging hubs to offer a comfortable stop for families and highway travellers. Plans include amenities such as coffee shops and children’s play areas. This approach could make the KSEB Fast EV Charging Stations more convenient while encouraging drivers to adopt electric mobility without worrying about long charging breaks.
To accelerate deployment, KSEB is working with private landowners and charge point operators through an expression-of-interest model. Using suitable privately owned sites could overcome limited availability of government land and help identify viable locations.
NH 66 Electric Truck Corridor Planned
The passenger-vehicle charging rollout forms part of a wider clean-transport strategy. KSEB also aims to transform Kerala’s 622-km stretch of National Highway 66 into India’s first state-led electric truck corridor within four years.
A study prepared jointly by KSEB and the International Council on Clean Transportation estimates that the NH 66 project will require an investment of ₹19 crore and 12.5 MW of charging capacity by 2030. The corridor is designed to make electric freight movement practical, reliable, and ready for grid demand.
Although electric trucks currently have limited adoption in India, KSEB expects more cargo operators to switch as vehicle technology and charging infrastructure improve. The KSEB Fast EV Charging Stations network and dedicated truck corridor could together support cleaner passenger travel and freight movement.
Supported by India’s PM E-DRIVE Mission
The expansion aligns with the Union government’s PM E-DRIVE programme. The Centre has allocated ₹2,000 crore to support approximately 72,000 public EV charging stations nationwide, including sites along major highway corridors and high-traffic destinations.
If completed on schedule, KSEB Fast EV Charging Stations could reduce range anxiety, improve charging convenience, and position Kerala as a leading testbed for fast charging and electric freight infrastructure in India.
