EQONIC reveals aluminum-based chemistry as the foundation of its next-generation battery technology, marking a major milestone in the race to develop safer, cheaper, and more sustainable energy storage solutions. The London-based battery developer has confirmed that its proprietary battery architecture is built around aluminum, eliminating the need for lithium, sodium, and rare-earth materials. The announcement comes as the company transitions from laboratory research to industrial validation, aiming to bring the technology closer to commercial production for electric vehicles (EVs) and battery energy storage systems (BESS).

Aluminium Battery Technology Promises Lower Costs and Better Safety

With EQONIC revealing aluminum-based chemistry, the company claims its battery technology could significantly reduce production costs. It targets material costs at just 30% of conventional lithium battery materials and expects manufactured battery costs to reach around £50 per kWh ($64/kWh) at large-scale production—roughly half the current automotive industry average.

The company also highlights safety as a major advantage. Its aluminum-based composite architecture is entirely non-flammable, eliminating the risk of thermal runaway that can lead to fires in traditional lithium-ion batteries. In addition, aluminum is one of the world’s most abundant metals, offering stable and responsible supply chains while avoiding the price volatility and geopolitical challenges associated with lithium, cobalt, nickel, and rare-earth elements. The batteries are also designed for complete recyclability, supporting a circular economy.

Industrial Validation and Commercial Expansion

EQONIC reveals aluminum-based chemistry as it shifts focus from research to industrial-scale testing. The validation phase will evaluate manufacturability, long-term performance, and reliability before commercial deployment. Rather than investing in its own battery gigafactories, the company plans to license its intellectual property and establish strategic manufacturing partnerships worldwide.

Founder and CEO Jas Kandola said aluminum provides the ideal combination of abundant raw materials, enhanced safety, and lower costs without the trade-offs of lithium- or sodium-based technologies. He added that progressing toward industrial validation is now the company’s highest priority.

Government Support and Strategic Partnerships

EQONIC has strengthened its commercialization strategy through several key developments in 2026. In June, the company was selected for the UK Government’s £452 million Battery Innovation Programme, delivered through Innovate UK, to develop a full-stack digital twin of its manufacturing process and accelerate factory scaling.

Earlier this year, EQONIC expanded its leadership by appointing banking executive John Saunders as Executive Director and governance specialist Angela Knight CBE as Non-Executive Director to support licensing and business growth. In May, the company also partnered with Barton Knight Group to supply, install, and maintain renewable energy storage systems across the UK.

Outlook

As EQONIC reveals aluminum-based chemistry and advances toward industrial validation, the company is positioning itself as a potential disruptor in the global battery industry. If its cost, safety, and sustainability targets are achieved at commercial scale, the technology could become a compelling alternative to conventional lithium-ion batteries for future EVs and large-scale energy storage.
