India is aiming to create a “UPI for EV Charging” to transform the country’s electric vehicle charging ecosystem by introducing a unified, interoperable network that allows EV users to find, access, and pay for charging services anywhere in India. Inspired by the success of UPI in digital payments, this initiative aims to make EV charging as simple and convenient as making an online payment.
India’s EV Charging Problem: Multiple Apps, Limited Convenience
India’s electric vehicle market is growing rapidly, but charging infrastructure fragmentation has remained a major challenge. Currently, the country has around 27,000 public EV charging stations, operated by multiple companies with different apps, payment systems, and access methods.
EV users often need to download several charging apps, create separate accounts, maintain different wallets, and check charger availability across multiple platforms. This complicated process has contributed to range anxiety, especially for long-distance EV travel.
To solve this challenge, India is aiming to create a “UPI for EV Charging” where drivers can access any compatible charging station through a single digital ecosystem.
Unified Bharat e-Charge (UBC): A One-Nation Charging Network
The government has introduced the Unified Bharat e-Charge (UBC) platform, a national digital framework designed to work like UPI for EV charging. The platform will create a common interface connecting charging operators, payment platforms, and EV users.
Under this system, EV owners will be able to:
- Find nearby charging stations in real time
- Check charger availability before reaching the location
- Book charging slots through a digital platform
- Pay instantly using preferred payment options
- Charge vehicles at different networks without separate registrations
Whether the charger is operated by companies like BPCL, HPCL, Indian Oil, or private charging providers, users will be able to access services through one interoperable network.
72,300 New Chargers to Strengthen EV Infrastructure
The government is planning a massive expansion of EV charging infrastructure with a target of 72,300 new charging stations across cities, highways, and major travel routes.
This expansion is being supported by the ₹10,900 crore PM E-DRIVE Scheme, which focuses on accelerating electric mobility adoption and developing charging infrastructure across India.
The initiative encourages major mobility companies and charging operators to open their networks, integrate APIs, and follow common standards to create a seamless nationwide charging experience.
BHEL and NPCI Supporting Digital EV Charging Revolution
The Unified Bharat e-Charge platform has been developed by Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) with support from the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI).
The platform operates on open protocols, allowing different charging companies and service providers to connect their systems. This approach will create a roaming-style charging ecosystem where EV users are not restricted to a single operator.
