A Major Step Towards Zero-Emission Construction Logistics

The construction and transport industries are taking another major step toward sustainability as Scania & Unicon demonstrate a fully electric concrete transport solution designed for real-world operations. Developed in collaboration with Liebherr-Mischtechnik, the project showcases how even one of the most energy-intensive and complex transport applications can successfully transition to zero-emission mobility.

The new solution combines a battery-electric truck with a fully integrated electric concrete mixer system, creating an advanced transport setup capable of operating in demanding construction environments without tailpipe emissions. The initiative marks a significant shift from experimental pilot programs to scalable commercial deployment.

Electrifying One of the Toughest Transport Segments

Concrete transport has traditionally been considered one of the most difficult heavy-duty applications to electrify. The industry faces several challenges, including high energy consumption, changing operating conditions, and the constant need to power rotating concrete drums during transportation.

However, Scania & Unicon demonstrate that these challenges can be addressed through a carefully integrated systems approach. Engineers optimized the truck, mixer application, and overall energy usage together to ensure reliable performance in daily operations.

A key innovation behind the project is the fully integrated electric power take-off (ePTO) system. This technology powers the concrete mixer drum directly from the truck’s battery pack, enabling an entirely electric end-to-end transport solution specifically designed for concrete delivery operations.

Built for Real-World Performance

The fully electric vehicle was developed over three years and engineered to handle demanding real-world construction conditions, including off-road driving and continuous concrete mixing.

Equipped with an installed battery capacity of up to 400 kWh, the truck delivers an operational driving range of approximately 200 kilometers. The configuration was optimized using advanced route simulations and energy modeling to maximize efficiency and operational reliability on typical concrete distribution routes.

Industry experts believe this project demonstrates that electrification can now move beyond standard urban deliveries into more challenging industrial applications.

Expanding Electric Concrete Fleets

For Unicon, the deployment represents an important milestone in its long-term sustainability strategy. The company has already announced plans to expand the project further, with an additional 10 electric vehicles expected to join operations in the coming years.

By 2027, the company aims to operate a significantly larger electric fleet as part of its broader ambition to achieve fully emission-free concrete transport by 2035.

Through this initiative, Scania & Unicon demonstrate how strong partnerships and advanced technology can accelerate the transition toward cleaner construction logistics and more sustainable urban development.
