India has achieved a significant milestone in its clean mobility journey, with over 29000 public EV charging stations now installed across the country. In a written reply to the Lok Sabha on February 10, 2026, Minister of State for Heavy Industries Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma confirmed that a total of 29,151 public charging stations are currently operational nationwide.
This rapid expansion reflects the government’s strong commitment to accelerating electric vehicle adoption and building a reliable charging ecosystem.
Charging Infrastructure: Fast vs Slow Chargers
Out of the total 29,151 stations installed, 8,805 are fast charging stations, designed to quickly recharge vehicles and reduce waiting times. The remaining 20,346 units are slow charging stations, which are typically installed in residential areas, offices, and public parking spaces for longer-duration charging.

The deployment of over 29,000 public EV charging stations ensures that EV users have access to both quick top-ups during travel and steady overnight charging options, improving convenience and usability.
Strong Financial Backing from the Government
The growth of this infrastructure network has been supported by substantial government funding. Under the FAME-II (Faster Adoption and Manufacturing of Electric Vehicles) scheme, ₹912.50 crore has been allocated to strengthen public charging infrastructure.
In addition, ₹2,000 crore has been earmarked under the newly launched PM E-DRIVE Scheme. This scheme aims to expand the charging network further, particularly in Tier-2 cities and rural areas, ensuring that electric mobility is not limited to metropolitan regions.
To streamline implementation, the Ministry issued operational guidelines last year under the PM E-DRIVE Scheme, providing a clear framework for deploying EV public charging stations across the country.
State-Wise Leadership and Market Liberalization
Among the states, Karnataka leads the way with over 6,000 public charging stations, followed by Maharashtra and Uttar Pradesh. This leadership demonstrates how regional efforts are complementing national initiatives.
Additionally, the Ministry of Power has declared the establishment of EV charging stations as an unlicensed activity. Under the 2024 guidelines, private entities can easily enter the market, encouraging competition and faster deployment of infrastructure.
From 6,000 to Over 29,000: A Rapid Leap
This achievement marks a dramatic rise from roughly 6,000 charging stations in early 2023 to over 29,000 public EV charging stations in 2026. The expansion directly addresses “range anxiety,” one of the biggest concerns among EV buyers, and supports India’s broader goal of sustainable and large-scale electric mobility adoption.
With over 29,000 public EV charging stations now operational, India is firmly accelerating toward a cleaner, greener transportation future.
