The Delhi government is intensifying its efforts to combat rising air pollution by accelerating the shift toward clean mobility. A major push is underway to expand electric vehicle infrastructure and strengthen public transport, positioning the capital for a greener and more sustainable future. As part of this plan, Delhi Gov to add 7000 EV charging stations & 2000 buses this year, signaling a decisive move to reduce vehicular emissions.
Massive Expansion of EV Charging Infrastructure
To encourage faster adoption of electric vehicles, the government plans to install around 7,000 new EV charging stations by the end of the year. This initiative directly addresses the current infrastructure gap. As of December, Delhi had 8,849 charging stations against a projected requirement of 36,150, leaving a deficit of over 27,000 units. With the new additions, the total number of charging stations is expected to reach 15,849.
These charging points are being strategically installed at key locations such as Rapid Rail corridors and Delhi Metro stations, with power distribution companies playing a major role in execution. Strengthening Public Transport with More Buses
Alongside EV infrastructure, the government is focusing on public transport expansion. Authorities have assessed that Delhi requires a total fleet of 11,000 buses to meet mobility demands. Currently, the city operates 5,245 buses, including 3,377 electric buses.
Under the proposed transport plan, 2,468 new buses are targeted to be added this year, with over 2,000 buses planned by the end of 2026. However, older CNG buses may be phased out during this period, a factor the government is still accounting for. Traffic Management and Digital Oversight
To complement clean mobility efforts, the Delhi government is working closely with the Traffic Police to ease congestion. A total of 62 congestion hotspots and 215 remedial tasks have been identified. So far, 83 tasks are completed, while 50 of the remaining are scheduled for completion within the next one to six months.
Additionally, the government’s digital portal for licensing and onboarding vehicles has registered nearly seven lakh vehicles since 2023, improving regulation and monitoring.

With the existing EV policy set to expire in March and a revised version expected soon, Delhi’s clean mobility push is entering a crucial phase.
