CATL Unveils New EV Batteries: At the IAA Mobility Show in Munich, Chinese battery giant Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) unveiled two new lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries under its Shenxing Pro product line. These innovations mark a significant step in CATL’s strategy to strengthen its foothold in Europe by offering affordable, long-lasting, and high-performance energy solutions tailored to the needs of European drivers.

New Battery Technology for European Drivers

CATL’s two new Shenxing Pro batteries are designed with distinct consumer and fleet requirements in mind:

  • Long-range, long-life variant: Developed for the European leasing and fleet market, this battery offers up to 758 km (471 miles) on a single charge. It is built for durability with a 12-year lifespan and minimal degradation, making it ideal for long-term users and commercial fleets.
  • Ultra-fast charging variant: Targeted at individual drivers who prioritize convenience, this version can add 478 km (297 miles) of range in just 10 minutes of charging. Importantly, it is optimized for cold-weather performance, addressing one of the main concerns of European EV owners.

Both variants are based on cost-effective LFP chemistry, which is generally safer and cheaper than nickel-based alternatives. By promoting LFP in Europe, CATL aims to reshape a market still dominated by more expensive nickel-cobalt battery technologies.

Strategic Expansion and Localization

CATL’s latest battery launch aligns with its broader vision of moving from “in Europe, for Europe” to “of Europe.” To achieve this, the company is pursuing multiple initiatives:

  • Manufacturing expansion: CATL has committed more than €11 billion to its European operations. It already operates factories in Germany and Hungary, with a third facility under construction in Spain through a €4.1 billion joint venture with Stellantis. The Hungarian plant is scheduled to begin production in early 2026.
  • Regional ecosystem development: Beyond production, CATL plans to establish a full European EV ecosystem covering raw material sourcing, manufacturing, remanufacturing, and recycling. The company is also set to open its first European after-sales service center in Eindhoven, Netherlands.
  • Battery swapping: Borrowing from its success in China, CATL intends to introduce battery-swapping services in Europe. This could significantly reduce the upfront cost of EV ownership for consumers and provide automakers with a recurring revenue model.

Addressing Competition and Market Challenges

CATL’s expansion comes at a time when European automakers such as BMW and Volkswagen face mounting competition from Chinese rivals like BYD. With subsidies being phased out in many countries, EV growth in Europe has slowed, raising concerns about meeting the stricter CO2 emission targets set for 2025.

By offering affordable LFP batteries, localized production, and innovative services like battery swapping, CATL is well-positioned to support European automakers in boosting EV sales. These advancements not only give carmakers cost-effective options but also help them remain competitive in the fast-evolving EV landscape.

Outlook

Europe remains the world’s second-largest EV market, and despite recent stagnation, its long-term outlook is strong. CATL’s new Shenxing Pro batteries, combined with its aggressive investment in local production and service networks, could play a pivotal role in driving Europe’s next phase of EV growth.

With its innovations in long-range durability, ultra-fast charging, and ecosystem development, CATL is not just entering the European market—it is reshaping it.
