In a major move toward sustainable governance and fuel conservation, the Odisha government has introduced a strict eight-point austerity directive aimed at reducing fuel consumption and promoting eco-friendly transportation. The new policy, announced under the leadership of Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, makes virtual meetings and electric vehicles mandatory for government operations wherever possible. The initiative comes amid rising concerns over fluctuating global crude oil supplies and increasing fuel expenses. The state administration has set a target to reduce monthly petrol and diesel consumption by at least 10 percent across all government departments. Virtual Meetings to Become the New Normal
As part of the reform, all official meetings, departmental reviews, workshops, and training programs will now be conducted online unless physical presence is necessary. According to the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), only essential officials will attend meetings physically when required, while the remaining participants will join virtually.

Mandatory EV Purchase From June 1
One of the most significant announcements under the new policy is the compulsory adoption of electric vehicles for official use. Beginning June 1, 2026, all new two-wheelers and four-wheelers purchased by government offices must be electric vehicles.
Additionally, any rented vehicles used for government work must also be electric from the same date. However, the government has allowed limited exceptions where petrol or diesel vehicles may still be approved under special circumstances.

Carpooling and Public Transport Encouraged

Officials travelling to distant locations for government duties have been advised to prioritize trains and public buses instead of private cars. The Finance Department has been instructed to prepare fresh guidelines within 15 days regarding vehicle entitlements and reimbursement policies.
Electric Bus Services and Employee EV Support
To further strengthen green mobility, the government plans to introduce electric buses and minibuses for employees traveling to office zones with high concentrations of government staff.
The Finance Department is also preparing a reimbursement framework that will allow officers using privately owned EVs for official duties to claim travel expenses.
