Montra Electric Launches India’s First All-Women EV Truck Plant: Montra Electric, the clean mobility brand of the Murugappa Group, has made a landmark entry into India’s electric commercial vehicle segment by inaugurating its state-of-the-art electric heavy commercial vehicle (eHCV) manufacturing plant in Manesar, Haryana. Strategically located in the Transport Hub of IMT Manesar, the facility is set to play a pivotal role in the country’s transition toward sustainable freight solutions.
India’s First All-Women Automated Battery Unit
One of the most striking features of this facility is India’s first all-women, fully automated battery production unit. This move reflects Montra Electric’s strong commitment to gender inclusivity and women’s empowerment within the EV sector. By combining advanced automation with a skilled female workforce, the company is not only setting a benchmark in the industry but also fostering equal employment opportunities in high-tech manufacturing.
Tech-Driven Manufacturing Excellence
Spread across 255,000 sq. ft. with a built-up area of 150,000 sq. ft., the Manesar plant is designed for scalability and flexibility. Initially, it will produce 6,000 trucks annually, with the potential to scale up to 7,500 units through additional shifts. The production lines are versatile enough to manufacture multiple models, including Montra’s flagship Rhino EV series.
The facility integrates 60% robotics and Industry 4.0 practices, ensuring precision, efficiency, and digital-first manufacturing processes. Advanced automation is further enhanced by the use of Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) integrated into the conveyor lines, streamlining operations from component assembly to final truck roll-out.
Additionally, the plant boasts an in-house battery assembly capacity of 1.7 GWh and state-of-the-art testing infrastructure, including battery cyclers, quality assurance labs, brake and roll testers, wheel alignment systems, and shower testing facilities, guaranteeing high standards of safety and performance.
Sustainability and Localization at the Core
Aligned with the Murugappa Group’s sustainability vision, the plant incorporates battery recycling, waste management systems, and EV charging infrastructure. Future expansion plans include the integration of renewable energy solutions to further reduce the carbon footprint of operations.
Montra Electric also emphasizes localization, sourcing 74% of components domestically, excluding imported battery cells. Beyond manufacturing, the company is committed to social responsibility through community engagement initiatives such as skill development programs and environmental campaigns like tree plantations.
Industry Impact and Future Outlook
Commenting on the launch, P.V. Satyanarayana, Chief Business Officer of Montra Electric HCV, said,
“The inauguration of our EV truck factory in Manesar marks a defining step in India’s transition to sustainable logistics. With our all-women battery line, high localization, and digital-first production approach, we are setting new benchmarks for green mobility and inclusive employment.”
Looking ahead, Montra Electric plans to leverage benefits under the PM E-Drive Scheme and explore state-level incentives to bolster growth. With this advanced facility, the company aims to position Manesar as a hub for next-generation electric freight solutions, driving both innovation and sustainability in India’s commercial EV landscape.
Conclusion
Montra Electric’s Manesar plant is more than just a manufacturing unit—it is a symbol of India’s clean mobility future. By combining cutting-edge technology, gender inclusivity, sustainability, and localization, Montra Electric is paving the way for a greener, more equitable commercial transportation ecosystem.
