Volvo EX90 Flagship EV: Volvo has rolled out major hardware and software upgrades for its flagship electric SUV, the EX90, reinforcing its position as one of the most advanced electric vehicles in the premium SUV segment. Deliveries for international markets began earlier this year, while an India launch is expected by the end of 2025. With these updates, Volvo continues to focus on faster charging, smarter software, and cutting-edge safety.
Hardware Upgrades: Faster and Smarter
One of the most significant changes is the introduction of a new 800-volt electrical architecture, replacing the previous 400V system. This upgrade not only improves efficiency but also reduces heat during charging. More importantly, it enables charging speeds of up to 350 kW, a leap from the earlier 250 kW capacity. With this, the EX90 can now add up to 250 km of range in just 10 minutes, making long-distance travel more convenient.
Another addition is the new electrochromic panoramic roof, which allows occupants to adjust transparency levels at the touch of a button—improving comfort by reducing glare and enhancing privacy.
Software Enhancements: A New Core Computer
At the heart of the EX90’s software transformation is a dual Nvidia Drive AGX Orin chip setup, replacing the older single Nvidia Xavier unit. With a combined computing performance of 500 TOPS (trillion operations per second), the system acts as the “brain” of the vehicle. This enhanced processing power supports advanced safety systems, smarter driver assistance, and seamless over-the-air (OTA) updates.
Volvo says this new hardware will enable more frequent and meaningful OTA updates—improving everything from battery management to infotainment systems, ensuring the EX90 remains future-ready.
New Safety Kit: Raising the Benchmark
Safety has always been Volvo’s stronghold, and the EX90 upgrades reinforce this reputation. The latest features include:
- Emergency Stop Assist (ESA): If the driver becomes unresponsive, the car automatically brings itself to a safe stop within its lane and triggers an automatic e-Call to connect with emergency services.
- Connected Safety Alerts: New warnings for hazardous road conditions, such as slippery surfaces or accidents ahead.
- Enhanced Automatic Emergency Steering: Improved ability to steer away from pedestrians or cyclists, even in low-light conditions.
- Upgraded Park Pilot Assist: Smarter automatic parking for tighter urban spaces.
Support for Existing Owners
Interestingly, Volvo is also offering a free retrofit of the new dual Nvidia computer to all 2025 EX90 owners. This comes after early adopters reported software issues with infotainment and keyless entry. Without the upgrade, existing vehicles would miss out on future OTA updates—making the retrofit essential for long-term ownership.
Volvo EX90 in India
The EX90 is expected to arrive in India by the end of 2025, joining Volvo’s growing electric portfolio, which already includes the EX30, EX40, and EC40. As the electric equivalent of the flagship XC90, the EX90 will be positioned as a premium seven-seater EV. Prices are likely to exceed the XC90’s current range of ₹96 lakh–₹1.05 crore.
Final Thoughts
With its faster charging, smarter software, and industry-leading safety features, the upgraded Volvo EX90 is more than just an electric SUV—it’s a statement of Volvo’s future vision. For Indian buyers awaiting a true luxury electric flagship, the EX90 promises to be worth the wait.
