Ford Fathom Electric Pickup to Get Ford’s New Universal EV Production System

Ford is reshaping its electric-vehicle manufacturing strategy with its new Universal EV (UEV) Production System, which will be used to build the upcoming Ford Fathom Electric Pickup. The midsize electric truck will be produced at Ford’s Louisville Assembly Plant (LAP) in Kentucky, marking a shift from Ford’s traditional 113-year-old moving assembly line.

Louisville Plant Gets a $2 Billion Makeover

Ford has gutted and rebuilt the 3-million-square-foot Louisville facility with nearly $2 billion in investment. The plant is being transformed into a fully electric vehicle site, with prototype builds targeted for Q1 2027. Customer deliveries are expected later that year.

The move follows Ford’s recent EV strategy pullback, including cancelling planned F-150 Lightning production and renaming its Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center the Tennessee Truck Plant. The Louisville investment, however, signals a renewed push toward more efficient EV manufacturing.

From Assembly Line to “Assembly Tree”

The Ford Fathom Electric Pickup will be built using an “assembly tree” rather than a conventional linear line. Three sections—the front clip, rear clip, and battery floor—are assembled simultaneously and joined later.

Large aluminum unicastings replace dozens of stamped and welded components, reducing structural weight by 27%. The battery forms the floor, while seats, consoles, and carpeting are installed above it. Parts are delivered directly to operators.

Faster Production, Fewer Parts

Ford says the UEV system can assemble vehicles 40% faster than LAP’s previous products, while cutting total production time by 15%. It uses 20% fewer parts and 25% fewer fasteners and requires 40% fewer physical workstations.

The system also introduces zonal electrical architecture, cutting more than 4,000 feet from the wiring harness and reducing its weight by 22 pounds. LAP will have Ford’s highest level of final-assembly automation, with time savings reinvested in automation and insourcing for long-term manufacturing efficiency gains.

Better Ergonomics for Workers

The electric pickup production process reflects worker feedback. Ford Chief Manufacturing Officer Bryce Currie says the new setup reduces twisting, turning, and bending, including an 84% reduction in reaching over fenders.

With 2027 production planned, the Ford Fathom Electric Pickup will become an important test of Ford’s new EV manufacturing philosophy. If the UEV system delivers its promised speed, lower complexity, and improved ergonomics, the new electric pickup could showcase how Ford plans to build future electric vehicles at scale for Ford’s EV ambitions.
