In a major push towards sustainable urban mobility, 25 EV charging centres are to come up in Prayagraj under the Uttar Pradesh government’s green mobility initiative. This forward-looking move, led by the Prayagraj Municipal Corporation (PMC), aims to transform the Sangam City into a hub for clean transportation. As charging infrastructure expands and incentives rise, Prayagraj stands at the forefront of India’s electric revolution—driving not just vehicles, but a cleaner, smarter, and more sustainable future.

PPP Model for Sustainable Growth

The charging centres will be developed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, ensuring efficient execution and private sector participation. Under this model, the PMC will provide land and electricity connections, while private operators will manage and maintain the facilities. A Request for Proposal (RFP) has already been issued to attract capable partners. According to Municipal Commissioner Seelam Sai Teja, “We have set a target to set up a total of 25 charging stations in Prayagraj.”

To maintain high-quality standards, the Urban Transport Directorate will conduct regular inspections to ensure compliance with technical and safety norms.

Uttar Pradesh Leading India’s EV Drive

Uttar Pradesh currently leads the nation in electric vehicle adoption, boasting over 4.14 lakh EVs, surpassing Delhi and Maharashtra. This impressive figure is largely attributed to the widespread use of e-rickshaws, which make up nearly 85% of the state’s total EV sales. These three-wheelers have revolutionized urban transport in cities like Prayagraj by offering an eco-friendly and cost-effective commuting option.

State Policies Fueling the Transition

The state government’s Electric Vehicle Manufacturing and Mobility Policy (2022) has been instrumental in accelerating the EV ecosystem. The policy emphasizes rapid adoption of EVs, development of robust charging infrastructure, and positioning Uttar Pradesh as a global hub for EV and battery manufacturing. It also offers tax incentives for EV owners and capital subsidies for companies setting up charging stations.

The long-term vision is to attract ₹30,000 crore in investments and generate 10 lakh employment opportunities, creating a self-sustaining EV ecosystem.

Prayagraj’s Role in the Clean Mobility Mission

With 25 upcoming EV charging stations, Prayagraj is taking a decisive step toward a cleaner, greener future. The initiative not only supports environmental protection but also boosts the city’s readiness for the electric mobility wave sweeping across India.

As the charging infrastructure expands, Prayagraj is poised to become a model city for sustainable urban transport in Uttar Pradesh.
