Tesla’s India Bookings Gain Traction: Tesla’s entry into India has been making headlines, and the latest booking figures show a clear surge in interest. According to reports from September 2025, bookings for the Tesla Model Y have jumped from around 600 in mid-August to over 1,100 by mid-September. This rapid rise highlights both the growing appetite for premium electric vehicles (EVs) in India and Tesla’s evolving strategy to capture this market.
The Rise in Bookings
Tesla officially entered India in July 2025 with the launch of its Model Y, priced at ₹59.89 lakh (ex-showroom). Initially, the company received about 600 bookings by mid-August, a number considered modest compared to expectations. However, the opening of Tesla’s new showroom in Delhi’s Aerocity significantly changed the pace. Nearly 500 additional bookings were generated within weeks, with a majority coming from the Delhi-NCR region alone.
The profile of customers visiting the showroom has also been noteworthy. Startup founders, entrepreneurs, and high-net-worth individuals formed the bulk of buyers, signaling that Tesla is successfully tapping into India’s wealthy urban demographic. With plans to open a “mega outlet” in Bengaluru, the company anticipates at least 400 more bookings during the next phase of its expansion.
Market Factors Behind the Surge
Several factors explain why bookings spiked in just a month:
- Expansion of physical presence: Having a showroom in a prime metro location boosted customer confidence and visibility.
- Metro market demand: Affluent buyers in cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru have shown keen interest in luxury EV adoption.
- Brand appeal: For many, owning a Tesla represents not just a car purchase, but also a status symbol and commitment to sustainability.
The Broader Market Context
Despite this strong momentum, industry analysts caution that Tesla’s journey in India will not be without challenges.
Initially, the 600 bookings in August were seen as “underwhelming,” especially since Tesla has an annual quota of 2,500 units for India. While finding the first wave of wealthy buyers is relatively easy, sustaining long-term demand will be the real test. Experts like Avik Chattopadhyay of Expereal emphasize that Tesla’s success will depend on after-sales service, customer support, and ownership experience.
Additionally, India’s market presents unique hurdles. Puneet Gupta of S&P Global Mobility points out that Tesla’s limited retail and service network could weaken customer trust. He even described Tesla’s entry as “half-hearted,” given that the company is currently importing completely built-up (CBU) units from its Shanghai factory rather than investing in local manufacturing.
Early Deliveries and Future Outlook
The first Tesla Model Y delivery in India took place on September 5, 2025, to Maharashtra Transport Minister Pratap Sarnaik, marking a symbolic start. Deliveries are currently focused on Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, and Gurugram, with expansion plans on the horizon.
Looking ahead, Tesla’s growth will hinge on how well it expands its physical presence, improves service networks, and adapts to India’s complex market conditions. While the surge from 600 to 1,100 bookings signals growing traction, the real challenge lies in sustaining this momentum and moving beyond niche buyers.
