The Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) has taken a major step toward clean and sustainable public transport, with plans announced for RTC to set up EV charging stations across key bus depots in the state. This initiative supports the large-scale introduction of electric buses and aligns with Telangana’s broader push for green mobility, especially in the Greater Hyderabad region.
RTC to set up EV charging stations: Project Overview
As part of its electric mobility roadmap, TGSRTC is preparing charging infrastructure at 25 bus depots located within the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) limits. This development is directly linked to the corporation’s plan to induct around 2,200 electric buses into its fleet, significantly reducing emissions and fuel dependency in urban transport operations.
Beyond Hyderabad, the project also extends to other strategic locations. Two charging points will be established at the Suryapet depot, while one charging station each is planned for Sangareddy and Nalgonda depots. Additionally, future installations are proposed at depots in Hakimpet, Shamirpet, and Godavarikhani, indicating a statewide expansion strategy.
Power Infrastructure and Coordination
A critical component of this initiative is ensuring adequate power supply. TGSRTC has estimated that approximately 124 megawatts of electricity will be required to operate the proposed charging stations. To address this, a coordination meeting was held between TGSRTC officials and the Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL).
During the discussions, detailed infrastructure requirements were reviewed, including power connections, substations, and switching stations. TGSRTC Vice-Chairman and Managing Director Y Nagi Reddy stated that the corporation would provide space at available depot locations for setting up substations necessary for uninterrupted charging operations. This collaboration is central to RTC to set up EV charging stations on such a large scale.
Implementation Model and Timeline
The charging stations will be developed in partnership with Charge Point Operators (CPOs), who will install and manage the facilities under a revenue-sharing model. These contracts will typically span a period of 10 years, ensuring long-term operational stability.
TGSPDCL Chairman Musharraf Faruqui has directed power officials to examine TGSRTC’s applications, prepare cost estimates by February 1, 2026, and initiate infrastructure works without delay. The goal is to support the rollout of electric buses within the current year.
Current Progress and Future Impact
Charging infrastructure is already operational at select depots, including Jubilee Bus Station, Cantonment, University of Hyderabad, and Miyapur-2. With RTC to set up EV charging stations across more depots, TGSRTC is positioning itself as a key driver of sustainable public transportation in Telangana, promising cleaner cities and more efficient urban mobility.
