North Northamptonshire Council is set to take a major step forward in supporting electric vehicle (EV) adoption, with plans announced to significantly expand its public charging infrastructure. The initiative reflects a growing commitment to cleaner transport, improved accessibility, and long-term sustainability across the region.

A Major Boost to EV Infrastructure

North Northamptonshire Council has confirmed that more than 1,500 new EV charge points will be installed across the area over the next three to five years. This ambitious rollout will more than triple the existing public charging network, which currently includes around 525 sockets. By 2030, the long-term target is to have at least 2,000 public charging points available, ensuring residents and visitors have reliable access to EV charging facilities.

Strategic Partnership and Funding Support

To deliver this large-scale expansion, North Northamptonshire Council is partnering with private operator Connected Kerb, a company experienced in building and managing EV charging networks. The project is supported by £2.9 million in funding from the Department for Transport’s Local Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (LEVI) fund, alongside additional private investment from Connected Kerb. Under the agreement, Connected Kerb will be responsible for building, operating, and maintaining the network for the next 15 years, ensuring long-term reliability and service quality.

Wide Coverage Across Towns and Villages

The expansion will span approximately 320 new sites across the region. Installations are planned in all 12 major towns, more than 20 villages, and at least 20 council-owned car parks. This broad geographic coverage is designed to make EV charging more convenient, regardless of where residents live or travel within North Northamptonshire.

Improving Access for All Residents

A key focus of the scheme is inclusivity. Around 30% of households in the area do not have access to a private driveway, which is one of the biggest barriers to switching to an electric vehicle. To address this, North Northamptonshire Council will introduce on-street charging options that allow drivers to plug in close to home, along with fully accessible charging bays in council car parks to support drivers with mobility needs.

Community Engagement and Future Readiness

Residents will be encouraged to take part in shaping the rollout through an interactive map, where they can view proposed charging locations and share feedback. They can also register interest in new charging sites or locate existing ones. According to Connected Kerb’s leadership, this programme is among the most ambitious EV charging projects in the region and is expected to play a crucial role in helping more people confidently make the switch to electric vehicles when the time is right.
