Jaguar has officially unveiled its most ambitious electric vehicle yet, marking a dramatic new chapter for the British luxury marque. The Jaguar Type 01 EV enters the market as a £130,000 four-door electric grand tourer designed to move the brand firmly into the ultra-luxury segment. Revealed in New York on October 6, 2026, the model follows nearly two years without a new Jaguar production car and comes after the controversial rebranding campaign of 2024. With more than 1,000 horsepower, a claimed range approaching 450 miles, and an unmistakably bold design, the Type 01 represents Jaguar’s biggest transformation in decades.
What Is the Jaguar Type 01?
The Jaguar Type 01 is a new ultra-luxury electric four-door grand tourer built on Jaguar’s dedicated Electric Architecture (JEA). It uses a tri-motor all-wheel-drive powertrain producing more than 1,000 hp, a roughly 118 kWh battery, and an 800/850-volt electrical architecture. The Jaguar targets a range of up to 720 km (WLTP), rapid DC charging and 0-100 km/h acceleration in around 3.2 seconds.
Orders are expected to open in early 2027, with first deliveries planned for the second half of 2027. India is also scheduled to receive the Type 01 in the second half of 2027.
Jaguar’s Radical Return to the Luxury EV Market
The Type 01 is much more than a new electric car. It represents Jaguar’s attempt to completely redefine its business model.
For decades, Jaguar operated in the premium automotive space alongside established German luxury manufacturers. The new strategy moves the company into a much smaller, higher-margin segment positioned above mainstream premium brands and closer to names such as Bentley, Porsche and other ultra-luxury manufacturers.
The Type 01 therefore abandons the traditional volume-focused approach. Jaguar is targeting roughly 10,000 vehicles globally each year, with the emphasis shifting from selling more cars to selling fewer, more expensive and more distinctive vehicles.
Jaguar Managing Director Rawdon Glover has argued that the brand needs to become commercially relevant by creating stronger desirability rather than chasing volume.

Over 1,000 HP and a Dedicated Electric Architecture
Underneath the dramatic exterior is Jaguar’s newly developed Jaguar Electric Architecture, or JEA.
The Type 01 uses a tri-motor electric powertrain with all-wheel drive. Output is expected to exceed 1,000 horsepower, while torque is around the 1,300 Nm mark depending on the final specification.
Jaguar claims acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in approximately 3.2 seconds, putting the large four-door GT firmly into performance-car territory.

850V Architecture Enables Faster Charging
Jaguar has designed the Type 01 around a high-voltage electrical system intended to deliver both performance and charging efficiency.
The approximately 118 kWh battery is paired with an 800/850 V-class architecture capable of supporting DC fast charging at up to 350 kW. Jaguar targets a 10% to 80% charging session in roughly 22 minutes under suitable charging conditions.
The battery itself is split between the front and rear sections of the vehicle. This unusual packaging approach helps Jaguar achieve a near 50:50 weight distribution while creating greater freedom for the cabin’s seating position.
The result is intended to combine the long-distance character of a grand tourer with the low seating position and driving feel expected from a high-performance vehicle.
A 5.2-Metre Electric Grand Tourer With 23-Inch Wheels
Design is arguably the most important part of Jaguar’s new strategy.
At approximately 5.2 meters long, the Type 01 is an imposing four-door grand tourer. Its proportions include a long bonnet, low roofline and huge 23-inch wheels, giving it a presence that Jaguar believes will distinguish it from increasingly similar-looking electric cars.
The design evolves the visual language first previewed by the Type 00 concept revealed in 2024.
Jaguar calls its design philosophy “Exuberant Modernism,” a deliberately expressive approach intended to make the car immediately recognizable.
The famous leaping Jaguar emblem has also been repositioned. Rather than appearing prominently on the front of the vehicle, the leaper is laser-etched into the side, reinforcing Jaguar’s move toward a more minimalist exterior identity.
Four Individual Luxury Spaces Inside
The Type 01’s interior takes an equally unconventional approach.
Rather than filling the dashboard with enormous conventional infotainment displays, Jaguar has pursued what it describes as a “hidden-until-needed” technology philosophy.
A 24-inch OLED display forms part of the digital experience, while the cabin incorporates a panoramic glass roof and four individual luxury seating areas.
One of the defining features is a longitudinal central spine running through the cabin. This architectural element visually separates the four seating positions and creates a more private, lounge-like environment.
The JEA platform also allows Jaguar’s engineers to shape dedicated rear footwells around the battery packaging. This helps create a lower seating position for occupants while preserving the space expected from a large luxury grand tourer.
Materials and surfaces draw inspiration from elements such as brass and travertine, reinforcing the car’s design-led character rather than following the increasingly common minimalist-tech approach seen in many EVs.
Jaguar Wants Younger, Affluent Buyers
Jaguar is not simply changing its product; it is changing the customer it wants to attract.
The company is targeting younger, affluent, and predominantly urban buyers who want their vehicle to make a statement. The Type 01’s enormous dimensions and unconventional styling are deliberately designed for customers who want to stand out.
This is a significant shift from Jaguar’s traditional customer demographic.
Glover has suggested that someone choosing a 5.2-meter four-door GT with such dramatic proportions is unlikely to be looking for a conventional luxury vehicle.
That philosophy also explains Jaguar’s rejection of what it sees as increasingly standardized EV design.
Jaguar Warns EVs Could Become Commodities
Jaguar’s new design strategy comes partly from a concern that electric cars are becoming visually interchangeable.
Glover has argued that if manufacturers continue following the same EV design archetypes—including short bonnets, narrow wheels and similar aerodynamic shapes—cars could become increasingly homogeneous.
Jaguar believes distinctive design will therefore become an important competitive advantage as electric powertrains become more widespread.
The Type 01 is the company’s answer: instead of blending into the luxury EV market, it wants to be instantly recognizable.
From 2024 Backlash to the Type 01
The Type 01 also arrives under the shadow of Jaguar’s controversial 2024 rebranding campaign.
The 30-second campaign featured models in brightly colored clothing but did not show a car. It triggered intense debate across social media, with critics accusing Jaguar of abandoning its heritage and focusing too heavily on cultural messaging.
The backlash became a major talking point surrounding Jaguar’s transformation.
Glover has acknowledged that one lesson from the controversy was that the new Jaguar could not simply be about change for its own sake.
The production Type 01 consequently retains some of the dramatic design ambition of the Type 00 concept while introducing more restrained colour choices, including silver and blue.
The company is now attempting to shift the conversation from branding to the actual product.
Jaguar Type 01 EV Enters Production With a New Business Strategy
The Type 01 is expected to be manufactured at Jaguar Land Rover’s Solihull plant in the United Kingdom.
Its limited-volume production strategy is central to Jaguar’s financial and brand repositioning. Rather than competing for the largest possible share of the premium EV market, the company plans to sell fewer vehicles at substantially higher prices.
The starting price is expected to be around £130,000 in the UK, equivalent to roughly $170,000 depending on exchange rates. That makes it dramatically more expensive than many of Jaguar’s previous comparable models.
In Australia, indicative pricing has been reported at around A$300,000.
The strategy is a major gamble, particularly because Jaguar is attempting to establish a new position at a time when the global luxury EV market is becoming increasingly competitive.
Jaguar Type 01 India Launch Confirmed for 2027
India is also expected to be part of Jaguar’s new global strategy.
The Type 01 is scheduled to arrive in India in the second half of 2027, following the opening of international order books in early 2027.
At its UK starting price of £130,000, the car would already translate to roughly ₹1.6 crore before Indian import duties and other taxes. The final Indian price is therefore expected to be considerably higher.
Its positioning will make the Type 01 a niche imported luxury EV rather than a mass-market electric model.
For Jaguar in India, the launch will represent a significant departure from the company’s previous positioning and could establish the Type 01 as a direct statement of its new ultra-luxury ambitions.
Deliveries to Begin in the Second Half of 2027
Jaguar plans to open order books in early 2027, with first customer deliveries expected during the second half of the year.
The UK and US are expected to be among the initial priority markets, while India is also scheduled for a second-half 2027 introduction.
The Chinese market rollout has reportedly been paused for the time being, reflecting the increasingly difficult competitive environment facing premium European automakers in China.
Jaguar’s Bigger EV Challenge
The Type 01 arrives at a complicated moment for Jaguar Land Rover.
The group is developing several additional electric models, but it has also recalibrated some of its earlier EV ambitions. JLR has been adapting its EV manufacturing strategy to provide greater flexibility for hybrid vehicles as consumer demand and government incentives evolve.
The company is also facing intense competition from Chinese automakers that are expanding rapidly across Europe.
Chinese brands, including Chery, Omoda and Jaecoo, have been increasing their presence in the UK market, adding pressure to established European manufacturers.
At the same time, Jaguar Land Rover has been cutting its global workforce, highlighting the broader financial and competitive pressures facing the group.
EV Market Conditions Add to Jaguar’s Risk
Jaguar is making its ultra-luxury EV bet at a time when electric vehicle demand is becoming increasingly difficult to predict across major markets.
The United States has become particularly challenging following the end of the federal $7,500 EV tax credit, which has affected the economics of new electric vehicle purchases.
JLR is therefore attempting to grow its US presence while simultaneously launching a vehicle with a significantly higher price than Jaguar’s historical products.
The company is betting that affluent customers will be less sensitive to mass-market incentives and more attracted by exclusivity, design and performance.
Jaguar Takes on Bentley, Porsche and Rolls-Royce Territory
The Type 01 places Jaguar in an unusual competitive position.
Rather than directly challenging mainstream premium EVs, the brand is moving toward a segment where buyers place greater importance on craftsmanship, exclusivity, performance and brand identity.
Ferrari and Bentley have also entered the electric era with new models, while Range Rover has introduced its first electric SUV at a starting price of more than £154,000.
Jaguar’s approach is different because the entire marque is being repositioned around electric power.
That makes the Type 01 more than a flagship. It is effectively a test of whether Jaguar can successfully reinvent itself as a low-volume, ultra-luxury EV brand.
Can Jaguar’s Radical Reboot Work?
The biggest question is whether customers will accept Jaguar’s new identity.
The company has deliberately moved away from the styling, pricing and customer profile that defined much of its modern history. That creates enormous potential, but it also introduces significant risk.
Some analysts remain sceptical about whether the makeover will translate into sustainable demand.
AutoPacific chief analyst Ed Kim previously argued that the backlash surrounding Jaguar in the US was influenced not only by the design but also by perceptions surrounding the company’s rebranding.
However, other luxury manufacturers have demonstrated that controversial new electric products can eventually find buyers when the underlying product is strong.
Jaguar now has to prove that its design-led strategy can translate into real-world sales.
The Beginning of a New Jaguar Era
The Jaguar Type 01 is one of the boldest reinventions attempted by an established luxury automaker.
With more than 1,000 hp, a 118 kWh-class battery, high-voltage charging, a claimed range of up to 720 km WLTP and a striking four-door GT body, it has the hardware to attract attention.
But the real story is the strategy behind the vehicle.
Jaguar is abandoning the pursuit of volume and embracing exclusivity, higher pricing, and distinctive design. Jaguar Type 01 EV enters a market dominated by powerful luxury brands at a time when the automotive industry is undergoing one of its biggest transformations.
If Jaguar succeeds, the Type 01 could become the foundation of a completely new British luxury EV identity. If it fails, the company will have taken one of the industry’s most expensive gambles on reinvention.
For now, Jaguar is making its intentions clear: it no longer wants to be just another premium carmaker. It wants to become one of the most distinctive names in ultra-luxury electric mobility.
