General Motors is preparing a shift in its U.S. electrification strategy as hybrid vehicles gain momentum while demand for electric cars cools. GM to Add Hybrid Models to Its U.S. Lineup, marking a notable change for an automaker that has spent much of this decade prioritizing an all-electric future. The move comes as higher gasoline prices, evolving consumer preferences, and a range of hybrid choices reshape the U.S. market. GM says its long-term destination remains zero-emission transportation, but executives acknowledge that reaching that goal may require a broader mix of technologies while charging networks and battery costs continue to develop.

GM is preparing to introduce hybrid and plug-in hybrid models in the U.S. as hybrid demand rises and EV growth slows. PHEVs could arrive from late 2027 to early 2028, potentially offering around 70 miles of electric range.

GM Reconsiders Its Hybrid Strategy

GM vice president of propulsion engineering Mike Anderson confirmed hybrids are part of the company’s U.S. product plan, although he declined to name the first models or provide a launch date. He said GM is listening to customers and wants to respond.

PHEVs Could Arrive From 2027

GM announced in 2024 that it planned to introduce plug-in hybrid electric vehicles, or PHEVs, by 2027. CEO Mary Barra also said this year that several hybrid and plug-in hybrid models were being considered.

AutoForecast Solutions expects GM’s PHEVs from late 2027 to early 2028, potentially offering about 70 miles of electric range across much of the portfolio. Possible applications include the Chevrolet Equinox and Chevrolet Silverado, but GM has not confirmed them.

GM plans a flexible powertrain strategy, combining in-house engineering with third-party components based on vehicle requirements and costs.

Hybrid Market Gains Momentum

U.S. hybrid sales increased 23% year over year in the second quarter, reaching a record 16.3% share of domestic vehicle sales, according to Cox Automotive. EVs accounted for about 5.8%.

Compact crossovers, SUVs, and midsize vehicles are among the fastest-growing hybrid segments. Hybrids can improve fuel economy without requiring drivers to depend entirely on public charging.

A Bridge to an Electric Future

GM to Add Hybrid Models to Its U.S. Lineup as a pragmatic bridge between gasoline vehicles and an all-electric future. Traditional hybrids combine an engine with electric motors and a battery, while PHEVs add electric driving before using the engine.

Extended-range or series-hybrid vehicles use electric motors for propulsion while an engine primarily works as a generator.

For GM, this is technology diversity rather than abandoning EVs. Anderson reiterated that an all-electric future remains the company’s goal. However, slower EV adoption, changing regulations, elevated gas prices, and shifting preferences have made flexibility more important.

What It Means for Buyers

GM to Add Hybrid Models to Its U.S. Lineup could give American buyers more choices across segments while charging infrastructure expands.

Key takeaways:

  • GM has confirmed hybrids are part of its U.S. strategy.
  • PHEVs could arrive from late 2027 to early 2028.
  • Forecasts point to roughly 70 miles of electric range.
  • U.S. hybrids reached a record 16.3% sales share.

GM to Add Hybrid Models to Its U.S. Lineup signals a recalibration of its electrification journey, placing consumer demand alongside its long-term EV ambitions.
