Hyundai Motor Expands EV Energy Services — but what does that really mean for the future of electric mobility? Imagine a world where your car not only drives you, but also powers your home during a blackout, supports the national grid, or even earns money by selling stored energy back to the system. Hyundai Motor Group is turning this vision into reality through advanced Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) and Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) technology, redefining the role of EVs far beyond simple transportation. This breakthrough marks a powerful shift toward energy independence, renewable integration, and smarter living — and the journey has only begun.
Highlights
- Hyundai Motor and Kia expand Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) services, enabling electric vehicles (EVs) to store, supply and share electricity with grids and homes
- Launch Korea’s first Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) pilot service for customers, supporting Jeju’s renewable-energy goals
- Expand Europe’s EV energy services by advancing from Smart Charging (V1G) service to bidirectional V2G capabilities, starting with the Netherlands
- Broaden Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) services in the U.S., turning EVs into emergency backup power and energy-storage solutions
- New initiatives reinforce Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to sustainable mobility and global carbon neutrality
- Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) is accelerating the worldwide rollout of its advanced Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) services. These solutions enable electric vehicles (EVs) to store, supply and share electricity with homes and power grids, redefining the role of EVs as essential components of the global energy ecosystem.
- The expanded services include Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) services in Korea and Europe, as well as Vehicle-to-Home (V2H) services in the United States. These initiatives highlight the Group’s commitment to expanding the role of EVs beyond mobility and contribute to more efficient, renewable-based energy systems worldwide.

What is V2X and How Does It Work?
HMG’s expanding Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) ecosystem uses bidirectional charging technology, allowing energy to flow both into and out of the vehicle battery.
- V2G (Vehicle-to-Grid) enables EV owners to store power during off-peak hours when electricity is cheaper and send surplus energy back to the grid when demand rises. This lowers energy costs, enhances grid stability, and fortifies renewable energy utilisation.
- V2H (Vehicle-to-Home) turns an EV into a household power source—useful for power outages, peak-demand hours, and emergencies. Unlike V2L, which powers small devices, V2H can energise an entire home.
These services are currently supported on E-GMP-based models, including Kia EV9, EV6, Hyundai IONIQ 5/6, the upcoming IONIQ 9, and Genesis GV60.
Global Rollout: Region-Wise Expansion
Korea – Launch of First V2G Customer Pilot
HMG will introduce Korea’s first V2G pilot program on Jeju Island by the end of 2025, using Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9. This initiative addresses energy oversupply challenges on the island through a smart energy exchange model. Participants can earn savings by buying energy low and selling high through Jeju’s real-time energy market. After successful testing, the project will expand nationwide in partnership with KEPCO and government bodies.
Europe – Commercial V2G Services in the Netherlands
Europe is moving from Smart Charging to full bidirectional power exchange. Beginning in the Netherlands at the end of 2025, customers can trade electricity directly with the grid through automated schedules. This is especially beneficial in high-tariff markets, reducing energy bills while supporting renewable integration. Kia EV9 and Hyundai IONIQ 9 will be first in line, with more models joining later.
United States – Vehicle-to-Home for Emergency Power
In the U.S., V2H services are being deployed as resilient backup power solutions. Kia EV9 already supports this feature, while Hyundai IONIQ 9 will follow. During outages, wildfires, storms, or high-demand periods, EVs can power homes independently—improving energy security and lowering utility costs.
A Sustainable Future Powered by Smart EVs
With V2X technologies rolling out across key markets, Hyundai Motor Group is redefining the future of electric mobility. EVs will no longer just drive homes—they may soon help power them, stabilise grids, and make renewable energy more accessible worldwide.
