First Honda EV India Launch in FY27: Honda Cars India is finally gearing up to enter the all-electric segment in the country. After years of focusing on hybrid models while rivals like Tata, Hyundai, and Mahindra aggressively expanded their EV portfolios, Honda has now officially confirmed that its first fully electric model will debut in India during the financial year 2027 (April 2026 – March 2027). The announcement was made by Kunal Behl, VP Sales & Marketing, Honda Cars India, marking a major milestone for the brand in one of the world’s fastest-growing EV markets.
A Fresh Electric SUV – Not an Elevate EV
Contrary to earlier reports, Honda has clarified that its first electric model in India will not be an electrified version of the Honda Elevate SUV. Instead, the Japanese carmaker is developing an all-new mid-size electric SUV under its “Asian Compact Electric” (ACE) project. This means the vehicle will carry a fresh nameplate, designed specifically as a battery-electric vehicle (BEV) rather than an adaptation of an existing ICE platform.
Made in India, for the World
One of the most significant aspects of this launch is Honda’s decision to designate India as a global production hub for the upcoming EV. The new SUV will be manufactured at Honda’s Tapukara plant in Rajasthan, with 50–70% of production allocated for exports to international markets, including Japan. This underlines India’s growing importance as a key player in Honda’s global electrification strategy.
Competing in a Crowded EV Segment
When launched, Honda’s first EV will compete in the mid-size electric SUV category. This is one of the most competitive EV segments in India, with upcoming rivals like the Hyundai Creta EV and Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, along with existing players such as the MG ZS EV. Honda’s decision to introduce a completely new product instead of electrifying the Elevate indicates its intent to stand out in this crowded space.
Preparing the Ground – Charging Infrastructure
To ensure a smooth adoption of its EV, Honda has already started equipping dealerships with fast-charging DC chargers across India. This step is crucial to address potential buyers’ biggest concerns—charging convenience and range anxiety. By proactively building this infrastructure, Honda aims to create a reliable ecosystem around its EV even before the launch.
Leadership Driving the Shift
Earlier this year, Takashi Nakajima assumed the role of President and CEO of Honda Cars India. During an informal media interaction in Delhi, Nakajima confirmed that the upcoming EV is under active development and will go on sale by late 2026. This leadership shift seems to have accelerated Honda’s transition toward full electrification in the Indian market.
Conclusion
Honda’s entry into the Indian EV market is undoubtedly late compared to its competitors. Still, the company appears determined to make a strong impact with a globally manufactured, India-first electric SUV. With a new nameplate, production hub in Rajasthan, export focus, and dealership charging infrastructure already underway, Honda is setting the stage for a major debut. By FY2027, Indian car buyers will finally see the first Honda electric SUV, a model that could redefine the brand’s future in India’s EV landscape.
