When Finland’s first EV virtual power plant goes live, it’s not just a milestone—it’s the beginning of a new energy era. Imagine earning rewards just by charging your car at home while helping balance the national grid! Thanks to Synergi’s cutting-edge smart charging service, over 10,000 Finnish households are now turning their EVs into mini power hubs, redefining how clean energy meets innovation in everyday life.
Turning EVs into Grid Assets
Synergi’s innovation transforms thousands of electric vehicles into a virtual power plant (VPP) capable of supporting the national grid. By aggregating EVs through its free mobile app, Synergi enables households to contribute to grid balancing in real time while earning monetary incentives for their participation.
The system works by automatically scheduling EV charging to the most affordable and least congested hours of the day. When the grid experiences overload or low demand, the platform fine-tunes charging — pausing or resuming as needed — to maintain stability.
Rewards and Flexibility for EV Owners
Drivers earn rewards based on two key factors: charging duration and total energy consumed (kWh). This approach not only compensates for energy use but also encourages users to keep their cars plugged in longer, enhancing the grid’s flexibility.
According to Antti Hämmäinen, CEO and co-founder of Synergi, “By becoming Finland’s first virtual power plant for EVs, we’re paving the way for households to take an active role in the energy transition and benefit from smart, flexible electricity use.”
Pilot Success and Consumer Benefits
Earlier this year, Synergi piloted the service with over 100 EV drivers, demonstrating that grid-balancing events didn’t interfere with daily routines. In fact, participants reported an improved charging experience and were more inclined to plug in earlier and stay connected longer.
The Synergi app supports all major EV brands, including Tesla, BMW, Volkswagen, Volvo, Audi, Hyundai, and SKODA, through manufacturer cloud integrations, eliminating the need for additional hardware or expensive installation.

Driving the Energy Transition Forward
This initiative marks a crucial step toward decentralized energy management in Europe. By promoting household-level demand response, Synergi’s technology not only enhances grid stability but also supports the integration of renewable energy sources.
