EV Ecosystem Rapidly Expanding in UP, Karnataka & Telangana

India’s electric vehicle transition is spreading beyond its traditional metropolitan strongholds, with Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, and Telangana emerging as major centers for public EV charging and electricity consumption. According to the latest Central Electricity Authority data, electricity consumed by public charging stations (PCS) across India surged to 1,558.69 million units (MU) in FY26, more than three times the 465.85 MU recorded in FY24.

Uttar Pradesh Emerges as EV Volume Driver

Uttar Pradesh has delivered one of the biggest surprises. Its share of nationwide PCS electricity consumption, which stood below 1% before FY24, climbed to 5.12% in FY26.

Industry experts attribute this acceleration to strong e-rickshaw and electric three-wheeler penetration, NCR spillover, highway and inter-city charging demand, logistics operations, and the formalization of charging loads under DISCOM-connected PCS categories.

UP reportedly accounts for around 18% of national EV sales and had 4,493 installed public charging stations by late July 2026. These numbers reinforce how the EV ecosystem rapidly expanding in UP, Karnataka & Telangana is reaching beyond India’s largest technology-driven cities.

Karnataka and Telangana Strengthen Charging Networks

Karnataka remains an infrastructure powerhouse, supported by Bengaluru’s mature EV market, technology-driven consumers, fleet operators, EV start-ups, and charging companies. With around 6,805 installed public charging stations, Karnataka has one of India’s largest charging networks. Fresh momentum under the PM E-DRIVE scheme could further accelerate deployment.

Telangana is following a similar trajectory, with approximately 3,739 public charging stations. Its established EV start-up ecosystem, OEM presence, digital fleet operators, and expanding charging networks are helping increase electricity demand.

The EV ecosystem is rapidly expanding in UP, Karnataka & Telangana, therefore representing three complementary growth stories: vehicle volumes, infrastructure density, and technology-led adoption.

Delhi Grows, But Rest of India Is Catching Up

Delhi’s declining share of national charging consumption does not mean its EV ecosystem is shrinking. Its electricity consumption increased from 203.1 MU in FY24 to 453.3 MU in FY26. Instead, other states are simply expanding faster, highlighting the geographical decentralization of India’s EV transition.

India Could Cross 3,000 MU in FY ’27

Kazam CEO Akshay Shekhar expects electricity consumption at public charging stations to potentially reach 2,500–3,000 MU in FY27, depending on charger commissioning and commercial fleet electrification.

The EV ecosystem is rapidly expanding in UP, Karnataka & Telangana shows that India’s next EV growth phase will increasingly depend on reliable power supply, charger uptime, interoperability, smart load management, and rapid infrastructure deployment—not vehicle sales alone.
