Dubai Unveils 208 Ultra-Fast EV Chargers: Dubai is accelerating its journey toward a greener and more sustainable transport network with a landmark initiative to electrify its taxi fleet. The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Dubai Taxi Company (DTC) have signed a long-term agreement to install 208 ultra-fast electric vehicle (EV) chargers across the emirate, a move aimed at reducing emissions and enhancing the efficiency of public transport. The deal was officially announced at WETEX 2025 under DEWA’s EV Green Charger programme.

Ultra-Fast Charging Infrastructure

The new chargers boast capacities of up to 360 kW, enabling taxis to recharge rapidly and return to service in under 30 minutes. The first phase of the rollout will see two main hubs become operational: one at DTC’s depot near Dubai International Airport and the other at its headquarters in Muhaisnah 4. Over the next 12–18 months, the full network of 208 points will be deployed gradually across Dubai, offering drivers convenient access through DEWA’s mobile app, smart cards, or contactless payment methods. Fleet operators may also benefit from special rates, enhancing cost efficiency.

Fleet Electrification Plans

Dubai Taxi Company is targeting full electrification of its taxi and limousine fleet by 2040, to operate more than 2,500 EVs by 2030. The recent expansion includes 200 all-electric BYD Seal vehicles, while other models like Tesla and Skywell are also being integrated into the fleet. By reducing charging downtime and increasing operational efficiency, the new ultra-fast chargers are expected to play a pivotal role in achieving these targets.

Environmental Impact

DEWA and DTC estimate that the initial phase of this initiative will cut approximately 37,939 metric tonnes of CO2 annually, with total savings of up to 49,654 tonnes when accounting for existing chargers. This project aligns closely with Dubai’s Green Mobility Strategy 2030 and the UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goals, reflecting a strong commitment to sustainable urban development. The electrification of taxis also promises a quieter, cleaner, and more comfortable travel experience for passengers.

Phased Transition and Strategic Goals

Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (DRTA) has been following a phased approach to fleet electrification. Trials with hybrid vehicles began in 2008, achieving a 34% reduction in fuel consumption and emissions. The plan aims to operate 80% hybrid or electric taxis by 2025, with full electrification targeted for 2027. Beyond environmental benefits, the transition to EVs also reduces operational costs, improves fuel efficiency, and enhances the overall customer experience.

Broader Infrastructure Growth

This initiative is part of Dubai’s larger strategy to expand EV infrastructure, with plans to install over 300 charging stations across the emirate to serve both public and taxi fleets. The DEWA–DTC collaboration combines infrastructure development with measurable environmental impact, paving the way for cleaner, faster, and greener urban transport in Dubai.

By integrating ultra-fast chargers with a growing EV fleet, Dubai is not only transforming its taxi services but also setting a benchmark for sustainable urban mobility in the Middle East.
