Delhi is taking a major step toward sustainable mobility. Delhi set to add 200 EV buses to its public transport fleet in March 2026. The move is part of the government’s broader plan to expand clean transportation and reduce pollution in the national capital. With this addition, Delhi continues to strengthen its fleet of electric buses, one of the largest in India.
Delhi’s Growing Electric Bus Fleet
Currently, the city operates more than 4,000 electric buses, making electric mobility a key component of its public transport system. With the latest expansion, Delhi is set to add 200 EV buses, further increasing the fleet’s capacity and efficiency.
The government has set an ambitious target of 7,500 electric buses by the end of 2026, a major step toward modernizing the capital’s transportation infrastructure. In the long term, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta has outlined a vision to expand the overall fleet to 11,000–14,000 buses by 2028, aiming for 100% electrification of public transport.
Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh emphasized that Delhi’s plan to add 200 EV buses is part of a larger effort to build a cleaner and more reliable public transport network for residents.
Recent EV Bus Launch and Government Initiatives
Earlier in February 2026, the government flagged off 500 new electric buses as part of its first-year achievements. The launch ceremony was attended by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, Transport Minister Pankaj Kumar Singh, Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Verma, and BJP National President Nitin Nabin.
During the event, the government also introduced the Delhi–Panipat electric bus service, improving regional connectivity while promoting green transportation.
Addressing the gathering, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the government’s focus on development and improved public services, stating that the expansion of electric buses reflects the administration’s commitment to modern infrastructure and sustainable growth.
Expanding Infrastructure for Electric Mobility
To support the growing EV bus fleet, the government is rapidly expanding charging infrastructure. Currently, EV charging facilities are available at 44 bus depots, while 36 additional depots are being developed under the PM e-Drive initiative.
The government is also planning a new Interstate Bus Terminal (ISBT) in Bhalswa, built on 20 acres of reclaimed landfill. In addition, authorities are conducting a feasibility study for a new Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) depot along Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) to accommodate the expanding fleet.
Policy Push for a Greener Future
Alongside infrastructure upgrades, the government is drafting EV Policy 2.0, which aims to further accelerate electric vehicle adoption. The proposed policy may include stronger incentives and potential plans to halt the registration of petrol two-wheelers by August 2026.
With the city steadily expanding its clean transport network, Delhi’s set to add 200 EV buses represents another significant milestone in the capital’s transition toward sustainable and environmentally friendly mobility.
