China’s electric mobility revolution has reached a stunning new peak, with the nation now hosting more than 18.5 million EV charging points, a milestone that’s reshaping the global transportation map. As of October 2025, China’s charging network has surged to 18.645 million units, according to the National Energy Administration (NEA), showcasing unprecedented growth and ambition. But what does this massive expansion really mean for EV owners, global markets, and the future of clean mobility? This article dives into the numbers, the strategy, and the surprising implications behind China’s record-breaking charging infrastructure.
A Remarkable 54% Yearly Growth in Charging Infrastructure
The expansion of China’s EV network over the past year has been nothing short of extraordinary. The total number of charging points rose 54% year-over-year, driven by the soaring adoption of New Energy Vehicles (NEVs) across the country.
To understand the scale, the charging infrastructure is divided into public and private charging “guns”, a term used for individual charging connectors.
- Public Charging Points: China currently hosts 4.533 million public charging guns, marking a 39.5% increase compared to the previous year. These chargers are crucial for long-distance travel, urban EV fleets, taxis, and commercial vehicles.
- Private Charging Points: Private chargers make up the largest chunk of the infrastructure, with 14.112 million units; over 75% of the national total. This segment saw an impressive 59.4% annual growth, indicating how quickly EV ownership is becoming mainstream in Chinese households.
Combined, these charging points boast a registered power capacity of 124 million kVA, showcasing the robustness of China’s energy grid in supporting the EV revolution.

EV Adoption Surges in Parallel
The explosive growth in charging stations mirrors the rise in NEVs on Chinese roads. Data from July 2025 revealed 36.9 million NEVs, of which 69.2% were battery electric vehicles (BEVs). This translates to:
- 1 charging point for every 2 EVs nationwide
- 1 public charger for every 8 EVs
Such ratios highlight China’s proactive approach to preventing infrastructure shortages as EV demand accelerates.
Ambitious Targets for 2027
China is not stopping at 18 million. The NEA aims to expand the national EV charging network to 28 million charging points by 2027, strengthening support for mass EV adoption and solidifying its position as the world’s largest and most advanced EV ecosystem.
