BMW’s Growing EV Momentum in India

BMW Group India has already established itself as a dominant player in the luxury EV space, commanding nearly 60% market share. In 2025 alone, the company sold around 18,000 vehicles in India, of which approximately 3,700 were electric. This momentum helped EVs account for 23% of BMW’s sales in Q4 2025, and the brand now aims to push that figure to 25% of total sales in 2026. This ambition clearly reflects why BMW’s plan to unveil three new EV models in India is such a significant move.

Planned Electric Lineup for 2026

While BMW has not officially confirmed every detail, several models are widely expected based on global showcases and market priorities:

  • BMW iX3 (Neue Klasse): Built on BMW’s next-generation Neue Klasse architecture, this electric SUV is expected to be a key pillar of the company’s Indian EV strategy.
  • BMW i3 Sedan (Neue Klasse): The electric alternative to the popular 3 Series, designed with better aerodynamics and improved range for everyday usability.
  • MINI Countryman Electric: Part of BMW Group’s multi-brand approach, this model will expand electric options under the MINI badge.

Additionally, a BMW i7 70 xDrive ALPINA variant may arrive later in 2026, targeting the ultra-luxury electric segment.

Investment, Infrastructure, and Local Strategy

To support its expansion, BMW is investing nearly ₹4 billion to upgrade its dealership network and charging infrastructure across India. This move is critical in a market where imported EVs face tariffs as high as 110%. By increasing local sourcing and assembly, BMW aims to manage costs and improve accessibility—another reason BMW’s plans to unveil three new EV models in India aligns well with long-term market realities.

Clear Focus on Battery Electric Vehicles

BMW India has made it clear that its future strategy revolves entirely around battery electric vehicles, with no immediate plans for hybrids. This focused approach sets it apart in a market where luxury cars still account for only about 1% of total vehicle sales.
