Bajaj Chetak EV Supplies Resume: Bajaj Auto has brought relief to customers by resuming deliveries of its popular Chetak electric scooter after weeks of production slowdown caused by a global shortage of rare-earth magnets.
Bajaj Auto has successfully overcome the rare-earth magnet shortage and brought Chetak EV deliveries back on track. With production now stable, demand growing, and the festive season approaching, the Chetak is ready to strengthen its place as one of India’s leading electric scooters.
Why did Chetak Production stop?
A few months ago, Bajaj Auto warned that it might face a zero-production month because it was running out of rare-earth magnets. These magnets are an essential part of electric motors used in EVs. In July, the company’s production fell by almost half, with only around 10,800 scooters made. This created delays for customers and pressure on dealerships.
The shortage happened because China, which supplies over 90% of the world’s rare-earth materials, restricted exports in April. India depends heavily on these imports, so the decision quickly affected Indian automakers. Bajaj Auto, being a large EV producer, was hit harder than smaller companies.
How Bajaj Auto Fixed the Problem?
The situation improved in August when new shipments of rare-earth magnets started arriving. On August 20, Bajaj Auto was able to restart full-scale production and shipments of the Chetak scooter. Dealerships across the country soon began receiving fresh stock, bringing relief to both sellers and customers.
The company also confirmed that it now has a secure supply of magnets and other key parts, which will ensure smooth deliveries during the festive season.
Ready for the Festive Season
Eric Vas, President of Bajaj Auto’s Urbanite Business Unit, said that demand for the Chetak is still very strong, and supplies have now returned to normal. Deliveries against bookings have already begun, and the company is scaling up production while keeping its focus on quality and customer satisfaction.
For August, Bajaj aims to produce around 15,000 scooters, with plans to increase this number to nearly 40,000 in September. This timing is crucial, as the festive season is traditionally the busiest period for vehicle sales in India. Bajaj Auto’s market share in the EV scooter segment has already doubled since last year, showing the strong position of the Chetak in the market.
Steps to Avoid Future Problems
To make sure production is not affected again, Bajaj Auto has started using low rare-earth magnets instead of only high rare-earth ones. This change helped the company avoid a complete production halt in August. At the same time, Bajaj is exploring new magnet technologies that could reduce or even remove the need for rare-earth materials altogether. These steps will make the company more secure against global supply chain issues in the future.
Conclusion
Bajaj Auto’s quick recovery from the rare-earth magnet shortage shows its ability to handle global supply chain challenges effectively. With production now normalized, growing demand, and preparations for the festive season well underway, the Chetak e-scooter is set for strong sales momentum in the coming months.
