In a major boost to electric mobility, the Central Government has sanctioned a grant of ₹68.12 crore to establish an extensive EV charging network across the state. Under this initiative, Kerala plans to add 219 EV stations equipped with 335 high-speed chargers, significantly enhancing accessibility for long-distance and urban EV users.
PM-eDrive Scheme Backs Statewide Expansion
The charging infrastructure rollout comes under the PM-eDrive (Pradhan Mantri Electric Drive Revolution in Innovative Vehicle Enhancement) scheme. Kerala had initially requested approval for 270 stations, including 147 along National Highways, and the Centre has now cleared 219 of them. With this move, Kerala is to add 219 EV stations, creating a more reliable and efficient charging ecosystem.
High-Speed 120 kW–240 kW Chargers to Replace Slow Legacy Units
The Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB), acting as the nodal agency, will oversee installation and operations. Unlike the current 30–60 kW chargers, the new stations will feature 120 kW and 240 kW fast chargers, capable of powering everything from two-wheelers and cars to e-trucks and inter-state e-buses. Each station will occupy a 15m × 7m area, ensuring adequate space for multi-vehicle usage.
Strategic Locations Across Highways, PSUs and Tourism Hubs
Most of the project sites have been finalized, including Vydyuthi Bhavanam Thiruvananthapuram, Keltron House, Aluva KSRTC, Kannur 33 kV Substation, KTDC Kovalam, BSNL Malappuram, Cochin Development Authority land, Travancore Titanium, Kanhangad Substation, Kozhikode Nallalam, and BSNL Uduma. Stations will be set up on government land and PSU premises, such as KSEB, KSRTC, BSNL, and key institutional campuses.
Private Participation and Subsidy Support
Private Charge Point Operators (CPOs) can avail up to an 80% subsidy for upstream infrastructure, making investment more attractive. With strong state-centred coordination, Kerala plans to add 219 EV stations, strengthening its position as a leader in green mobility. As tenders are set to be invited soon, Kerala’s EV ecosystem is on the brink of rapid expansion—marking another milestone as Kerala adds 219 EV stations under the national clean mobility mission.
