Renault’s electrification push in India is set to gain momentum as the Renault Kwid EV has been spotted testing again, offering enthusiasts a clearer glimpse of the upcoming electric hatchback. Expected to launch around 2026, the Kwid EV is poised to become one of India’s most affordable electric cars, likely competing with the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV. Early reports suggest that the car may be based on the Euro-spec Dacia Spring EV, with several features carried over from the European model.

Exterior Design and Styling

Spy shots of the Kwid EV reveal several key updates to its exterior design. The front fascia now features a closed-off grille typical of EVs, with the charging port cleverly integrated behind the Renault logo—confirming the vehicle’s electric credentials. The front bumper has a distinctive perforation, while the Y-shaped LED daytime running lights (DRLs) and headlights positioned below them give the hatchback a modern EV-specific look.

The side profile of the Kwid EV largely resembles the ICE version, retaining black wheel arch claddings, flap-style door handles, and steel wheels with hubcaps on mid-spec variants. At the rear, the hatch gets updated Y-shaped taillights, a redesigned bumper, and a roof spoiler, further distinguishing it as an electric model. The absence of an exhaust pipe in the spy shots confirms the EV status.

Interior and Technology

Inside, the Kwid EV is expected to get a refreshed dashboard layout. The cabin will feature dual digital screens, including a digital instrument cluster and a touchscreen infotainment system, possibly up to 10 inches. Additional features may include a redesigned steering wheel, USB-C ports, and, in select variants, Level-1 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS)—although the latter may not be offered in India initially.

Performance and Range

Under the skin, the Kwid EV is likely to mirror the Dacia Spring EV. It may come equipped with a 26.8 kWh battery pack, paired with a 33 kW front-wheel-drive motor capable of producing around 45 bhp, with a more powerful 65 bhp option possibly available. Performance-wise, the car can accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 19.2 seconds, with a top speed of 125 km/h. The EV is expected to offer a claimed range of over 220 km on a single charge, making it suitable for city commutes and short intercity trips.

Charging capabilities are also encouraging. Based on the Dacia Spring EV, the Kwid EV could support 30 kW DC fast charging, allowing the battery to go from 20% to 80% in roughly 45 minutes, providing a practical solution for quick top-ups.

Launch and Market Positioning

The Renault Kwid EV is anticipated to enter the Indian market around 2026, and its competitive pricing could make it an attractive choice for budget-conscious buyers seeking an electric vehicle. Positioned below rivals like the Tata Tiago EV and MG Comet EV, the Kwid EV could appeal to first-time EV buyers looking for an affordable, stylish, and practical city car.

Conclusion

With its modern EV-specific styling, practical range, and accessible price point, the Renault Kwid EV promises to make electric mobility more attainable for Indian buyers. The front-mounted charging port, refreshed interiors, and compact footprint indicate that Renault is serious about bringing a compelling city EV to the market. As spy shots continue to emerge, enthusiasts eagerly await official details and pricing to see if the Kwid EV can live up to the growing expectations in India’s electric car segment.
