Overview
PM Modi inaugurates Suzuki’s EV plant in Gujarat: Prime Minister Narendra Modi concluded his two-day Gujarat visit on August 26, 2025, with a landmark event for India’s automobile sector and green mobility future. At Suzuki Motor’s Hansalpur plant in Ahmedabad, PM Modi inaugurated Suzuki’s first global Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV), the e-VITARA, and also launched a new facility for the localized production of hybrid battery electrodes. These projects not only strengthen India’s manufacturing ecosystem but also mark a giant leap in the country’s transition toward clean energy innovation.
e-VITARA: Suzuki’s First Global Electric SUV
The highlight of the visit was the official flag-off of the e-VITARA, Suzuki’s first global strategic electric SUV. The Made-in-India BEV will be exported to over 100 countries, including advanced markets such as Europe, Japan, and the UK.
The e-VITARA’s global launch from Gujarat positions India as a manufacturing hub for Suzuki’s electric vehicles, a step that aligns with the government’s vision of making India a leader in sustainable mobility solutions.
During the event, PM Modi flagged off the first export consignment of e-VITARA vehicles, with the UK receiving the first unit. This marks India’s transition from being a large consumer market to becoming a key player in the global EV supply chain.
Strengthening India’s Battery Ecosystem
Alongside the EV launch, PM Modi inaugurated a facility for localized production of hybrid battery electrodes at the TDS Lithium-Ion Battery plant in Gujarat. The plant is a joint venture between Toshiba, Denso, and Suzuki.
With this, India will now manufacture over 80% of battery components domestically, reducing dependence on imports and strengthening the country’s self-reliance (Aatmanirbhar Bharat) in the EV ecosystem. The facility is expected to create new jobs, accelerate innovation in clean energy, and make India’s EV production more cost-competitive on the global stage.
Boost to “Make in India” and Green Mobility
In his address, PM Modi called the inauguration a “milestone for India’s green mobility journey”. He emphasized that the e-VITARA project not only strengthens the “Make in India” initiative but also makes India a central hub for Suzuki’s international EV exports.
The Prime Minister said,
“Today is a special day in India’s quest for self-reliance and being a hub for green mobility. The e-VITARA, made in India, will soon be running on the roads of over 100 nations. Alongside, the localized battery production will boost our energy security and create a strong foundation for future innovation.”
Other Projects During Gujarat Visit
The EV plant inauguration was part of PM Modi’s two-day Gujarat tour (August 25–26, 2025), during which he launched and dedicated several projects worth over ₹5,400 crore.
- August 25, 2025: PM Modi laid the foundation stone and inaugurated multiple development projects in Ahmedabad, covering urban infrastructure, roads, railways, and energy.
- August 26, 2025: Alongside the EV launch, he also inaugurated railway projects worth over ₹1,400 crore, including the doubling of the 65 km Mahesana-Palanpur rail line, aimed at boosting connectivity in the region.
A Turning Point for India’s EV Future
The inauguration of Suzuki’s EV production line and battery electrode facility (PM Modi inaugurates Suzuki’s EV plant in Gujarat) is being seen as a turning point in India’s electric mobility sector. Experts believe that India’s position as an export hub for EVs will not only generate employment but also establish the country as a key partner in global clean energy solutions.
With the launch of the e-VITARA and the strengthening of domestic battery production, India has taken a decisive step toward becoming a global leader in electric vehicles and sustainable technology.
