The VMC council held an important meeting ahead of the end of its current term, focusing on several key urban development issues, including electric vehicle infrastructure, drainage improvements, water management, and sanitation facilities. The meeting highlighted the city’s preparations for future growth and the urgent need to strengthen civic infrastructure ahead of the upcoming monsoon season.

Push for Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure

One of the major highlights of the VMC council meeting was the approval of a proposal to establish public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations across the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation limits. The proposal was presented by MLA Bonda Umamaheswara Rao, who emphasized that the number of electric vehicles in the city is steadily increasing.

To support the growing EV ecosystem, he suggested installing charging stations in designated parking areas across the city. The VMC council approved the proposal, recognizing the need to expand EV infrastructure to encourage sustainable transportation and reduce carbon emissions.

In addition, the council also adopted the Andhra Pradesh Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy (SEMP). This policy provides a structured framework for developing an integrated electric mobility ecosystem in the state. By adopting the policy, the city aims to promote cleaner transportation and support the growth of electric vehicles.

Drainage Works and Monsoon Preparedness

Another major issue discussed during the VMC council meeting was the city’s drainage system and the need to complete ongoing drainage works before the monsoon season begins.

CPI(M) floor leader B. Satya Babu urged authorities to speed up the stormwater drain project and ensure that desilting is carried out in both major and minor drains across the city. These measures are considered essential to prevent waterlogging and flooding during heavy rainfall.

He also proposed that reservoirs already approved for the city be constructed without delay to help address drinking water shortages. Additionally, steps should be taken to ensure that the water supply remains clean and uncontaminated.

Focus on Public Toilets and Sanitation

Sanitation was another key concern raised during the meeting. The 52nd Ward member Ummadi Venkateswara Rao pointed out that Vijayawada’s population has been steadily increasing, but the number of public toilets has not grown accordingly.

He noted that many existing public toilets are poorly maintained and require urgent attention. The council approved his proposal to improve the maintenance and management of public toilets to ensure better hygiene and accessibility for residents.

Final Meeting Before Council Term Ends

The meeting was particularly significant as it marked the final session before the current council term concludes on 17 March 2026. The elected body has been in office since March 2021.

Earlier in February 2026, the council had also approved a revised expenditure budget of ₹1,643.64 crore for the 2026–27 financial year, which included adjustments to allocations for the stormwater drain project.

At the end of the meeting, corporators expressed their appreciation to Mayor Rayana Bhagya Lakshmi and VMC Commissioner Dhyanachandra H.M. for their leadership and cooperation during the council’s tenure.

Overall, the decisions taken by the VMC council aim to strengthen Vijayawada’s infrastructure, promote sustainable transportation, and improve civic amenities for residents.
