In a major step toward accelerating electric mobility, the state has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative—Telangana Govt Staff to Get 20% EV Discount on the purchase of electric two-wheelers and four-wheelers. The Minister revealed that the government held several rounds of negotiations with leading EV manufacturers, including Mahindra Electric, Ola Electric, Ather Energy, and Gravton Motors. Discussions are also underway to onboard Tata Motors into the programme. Through these OEM partnerships, approximately five lakh government employees are eligible for up to 20% discounts on EV purchases, potentially saving up to ₹4 lakh per employee.
Notably, this incentive comes without any direct budgetary subsidy. Instead, the discounts are secured through institutional bulk negotiation—a model that sets a new benchmark for other states to follow.
Boosting Affordability with Existing EV Policy Benefits
Adding to the appeal, Telangana already provides a 100% exemption on road tax and registration fees for all electric vehicles, covering two-wheelers, four-wheelers, taxis, goods carriers, autorickshaws, tractors and buses.
“When combined with the new purchase discount, Telangana Govt Staff to Get 20% EV Discount programme makes EV ownership among the most affordable in the country,” the Minister said. He emphasised that encouraging government employees to become early adopters will create a ripple effect, advancing cleaner mobility across society.
Since the launch of the state’s EV policy, over 1,15,551 EVs have been sold, and although the government incurred revenue losses of ₹925.94 crore due to tax exemptions, it remains committed to long-term sustainability.
Strengthening EV Ecosystem & Public Transport
To support rising EV adoption, the government is expanding charging infrastructure across the state—from the Telangana Secretariat to district-level offices and major public parking spaces.
Additional initiatives include:
- A mandate for government departments in the CORE Urban Region to purchase only EVs.
- Deployment of 2,800 electric buses in the state’s public transport fleet.
- A plan to retrofit nearly one lakh petrol, diesel, and gas autorickshaws with electric kits.
