Sony-Honda Drops Afeela EV Project—a headline few expected to see so soon. In a surprising twist that has sent shockwaves through the EV world, Sony Honda Mobility has abruptly halted its much-anticipated Afeela lineup, raising big questions about the future of this high-profile partnership. What triggered such a drastic move from two industry giants that once promised to redefine mobility? Early insights point to Honda’s aggressive EV strategy overhaul, but the full story runs deeper. As the collaboration designed to blend cutting-edge software with automotive engineering hits pause, curiosity grows: what comes next for this once-promising alliance?

Why Was the Afeela EV Program Cancelled?

Earlier this month, Honda announced a dramatic overhaul of its EV business, including a massive writedown of up to 2.5 trillion yen ($15.7 billion)—its first annual loss in nearly seven decades. As part of this restructuring, Honda withdrew the platform and key engineering assets originally committed to the Afeela project. Without these fundamentals, the Sony-Honda Joint Venture scrapped the Afeela 1 sedan and its planned crossover sibling, stating that it no longer had a “viable path forward” to bring the vehicles to market.

Market conditions in the U.S. also played a significant role. The companies cited a “fundamental shift,” including the elimination of federal EV tax credits, rising tariffs on imports, and cooling demand for premium electric vehicles. These combined pressures made the ultra-high-tech Afeela models less feasible in the current environment.

Impact on Afeela Customers

The Afeela 1, originally priced from $89,900, had begun taking pre-orders in California last year, with deliveries scheduled to start in late 2026. Following the program cancellation, SHM confirmed that all customers will receive full refunds on their reservations.

Ironically, the announcement came just days after the opening of the new Afeela Studio & Delivery Hub in Torrance, California—highlighting the abruptness of the strategic shift as the Sony-Honda joint venture scraps the project.

Financial Impact on Sony and Honda – Sony-Honda Drops Afeela EV Project

Both companies stated that the discontinuation will not significantly affect their financial forecasts. Honda clarified that the impact on its revised full-year projections will be “immaterial,” and Sony echoed a similar stance, saying it does not expect meaningful financial consequences.

What’s Next for Sony Honda Mobility?

Although the Afeela EV models are officially cancelled, SHM itself is not being dissolved. The partners are currently reevaluating the future direction of the venture, and analysts believe it could pivot toward software platforms, entertainment-focused mobility tech, or lower-cost EV solutions.

For now, the Sony-Honda joint venture scraps the Afeela dream—but a new chapter may still be ahead.
