As Ahmedabad prepares to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games, the Push for EV-charging sites continues across the city. With just four years remaining, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) is accelerating efforts to strengthen electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and align the city with global sustainability standards.

EV Infrastructure: Progress So Far

Five years ago, AMC identified 81 locations for public EV-charging stations to promote clean mobility and reduce air and noise pollution. However, approvals have been granted for only 31 sites so far. Out of these, 21 stations are currently operational, while work is ongoing at six more.

In 2021, the first public EV-charging stations were set up near Kankaria Gate No. 1, Kankaria Kids City, and Navrangpura multilevel parking. These early installations marked the beginning of a broader electrification drive.

On February 29, 2024, AMC issued tenders for additional charging stations, followed by a pre-bid meeting on March 7 attended by representatives of 17 companies. After feedback, lease terms were revised and deadlines extended. By May 9, four companies had submitted technical bids, with three qualifying. On June 13, 2024, proposals from two companies were approved to establish stations at 27 locations. Later, in December 2025, tenders were floated for 54 more sites, but only one company applied for just four locations.

Private Sector Hurdles

Despite policy support, the Push for EV-charging sites continues to face challenges. Nearly 50 of the originally proposed 81 locations have not attracted private partners under the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Officials indicate that companies find land rent concessions insufficient, while EV adoption in the city remains relatively low, reducing commercial viability.

To encourage uptake, the Gujarat government introduced the Gujarat State Electric Vehicle Policy in 2021, offering subsidies ranging from ₹20,000 to ₹1.50 lakh for EVs and charging stations. Additionally, a 100% vehicle tax exemption is being offered to private EV buyers. New mandates now require residential high-rises to equip every parking slot with a charger, and commercial buildings must ensure at least one in five parking spaces is EV-ready.

CWG 2030 & Sustainable Vision

The Push for EV-charging sites continues as part of a larger infrastructure overhaul linked to the 2030 Commonwealth Games. The Gujarat Budget 2026–27 has allocated ₹1,278 crore to transform Ahmedabad into an “Olympic-ready” city, strengthening its bid for the 2036 Olympics.

Under the “Twin City” master plan connecting Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar, seamless integration of Metro, BRTS, and electric mobility aims to minimize travel time for athletes and visitors. Gujarat also targets 100% renewable energy usage during the Games, mirroring global sustainability benchmarks.

Major projects, including the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Sports Enclave and the Police Academy Sports Hub, are set to begin construction in April 2026.

The Road Ahead

While the Push for EV-charging sites continues, Ahmedabad must overcome private investment hurdles and boost EV adoption to meet its clean mobility goals. With the CWG deadline approaching, expanding the charging network will be critical to delivering a sustainable and globally competitive sporting event.
