The transition to electric mobility in India has entered a crucial phase, especially in the rapidly growing two-wheeler and three-wheeler segments. Addressing long-standing gaps in charging infrastructure and interoperability, the Leaf Forum debuts to unify charging standards, marking a milestone moment for the light electric vehicle (LEV) ecosystem.
A Unified Industry Effort Begins
The Light Electric-Vehicle Acceleration Forum (LEAF) was officially launched on March 30, 2026, emerging as a neutral, industry-led consortium dedicated to strengthening the EV charging ecosystem. Inaugurated by Union Heavy Industries Minister H. D. Kumaraswamy, the forum has committed to working closely with government and regulatory authorities to support nationwide charging expansion aligned with policy mandates.
At its debut, the forum united over 20 organisations from across the sector—vehicle makers, charging operators, component suppliers, and software firms. Built through an MoU signed by Hero MotoCorp, Ather Energy, and IPEC India, the founding members are now steering this collaborative platform forward. This collective effort ensures that the Leaf Forum debuts to unify charging standards with strong and diverse industry backing.
Solving Fragmented Charging Through Standardisation
One of LEAF’s core missions is to eliminate fragmented charging experiences that currently slow down EV adoption. Industry leaders have long emphasised the need for interoperability to address user frustration and “charging anxiety.” The forum aims to align stakeholders on common standards, enabling seamless access to public charging networks across India.
Central to these efforts is the Light Electric Combined Charging System (LECCS) — a unified standard for electric two-wheeler and three-wheeler charging. Approved by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under IS 17017, LECCS introduces the versatile ‘Type 7’ connector, capable of supporting both AC slow charging and DC fast charging through a single interface. This unified communication protocol is expected to simplify user access, improve reliability, and enhance compatibility across charging platforms.
