BYD Plans to Establish Electric Vehicle Factory Near Hyderabad
Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer BYD is planning to set up its first Indian factory near Hyderabad, Telangana. The state government has proposed three potential sites around Hyderabad for this facility, and BYD representatives are currently evaluating these locations. Once a site is finalized, an agreement between BYD and the state authorities is expected.
This initiative marks BYD’s first manufacturing unit in India. Currently, the company imports its EVs from China, which involves high import duties and results in higher prices for Indian consumers. By establishing a local manufacturing facility, BYD aims to reduce costs, enhance competitiveness, and increase its market presence in India’s growing EV sector.
The proposed factory is anticipated to be a significant private sector investment in the EV industry within Telangana. It could also lead to the development of ancillary industries producing EV components, fostering an automotive cluster around Hyderabad.
In addition to vehicle manufacturing, BYD plans to establish a 20-gigawatt battery production plant in India. Over the next five to seven years, the company aims to scale up production capacity to 600,000 EVs annually.
This move aligns with BYD’s global expansion strategy and reflects its commitment to investing in India’s EV infrastructure. The establishment of a manufacturing facility in Hyderabad could significantly boost the local economy and contribute to the advancement of sustainable transportation in the region.
