BeMC Plans to Set Up 14 EV Charging Stations in Silk City, and the announcement has already stirred excitement among residents and EV users. At a time when electric mobility is gaining momentum in Berhampur and Gopalpur, the city’s limited charging options have long been a major concern. Now, with over 4,500 EVs already on the roads, this ambitious proposal promises a turning point. Why is this project so crucial for the city’s future? How will it change the daily travel experience for thousands? Dive into the full story to uncover what this plan truly means for Silk City’s green evolution.

According to official data, Ganjam district has recorded over 4,500 EV registrations as of the end of October, with the majority being two-wheelers. However, despite this impressive growth, the charging infrastructure in the area has not expanded proportionately. Apart from a handful of facilities available at private showrooms and hotels, Silk City currently lacks accessible and dedicated public charging options. This has caused inconvenience for daily commuters as well as visitors from nearby regions who often struggle with range anxiety and limited charging choices.

To bridge this gap, BeMC has identified 14 strategic public locations, including shopping complexes, markets, medical zones, tourist destinations, and other busy public spaces, where land parcels of about 100 square metres are available. These spaces will support both charging units and designated parking for two-wheelers and four-wheelers.

BeMC Commissioner Prathamesh Arvind Rajeshirke has already submitted the proposal to the state government. Once approved, the project will be fast-tracked. A senior BeMC official expressed confidence that government clearance would pave the way for quick implementation.

Experts believe that this initiative aligns perfectly with the recently launched PM E-Drive Scheme, under which the central government aims to set up 72,300 public charging stations across India. Former Berhampur MLA Siba Shankar Sahani emphasized that BeMC should fully leverage this scheme to accelerate EV infrastructure development in the city.

As Berhampur moves toward becoming a greener, more future-ready urban hub, the proposed charging stations are expected to significantly boost EV adoption and ease mobility for thousands of residents and visitors.
