Bengaluru: Karnataka has strengthened its position as a leading electric mobility market, with 6,805 EV charging stations installed as of July 29, according to the latest data released by the Ministry of Heavy Industries in the Rajya Sabha. Karnataka has 6805 EV charging stations
The figures, presented in response to an unstarred question on August 7, place Karnataka second among Indian states in public electric vehicle charging infrastructure. Maharashtra leads the country with 6,985 charging stations, just 180 more than Karnataka.
Karnataka Accounts for Nearly 13% of India’s EV Chargers
The 6,805 charging stations in Karnataka represent nearly 13% of India’s total 52,718 public EV charging stations. The numbers highlight the state’s growing focus on supporting electric cars, two-wheelers, and other battery-powered vehicles as EV adoption accelerates.
Karnataka also has a significant lead over several other major southern states. Tamil Nadu has 3,839 charging stations, followed by Telangana with 3,739 and Kerala with 3,399. Andhra Pradesh has 1,976 stations, while Goa has 314.
At the national level, Uttar Pradesh has 4,493 public charging stations, and Rajasthan has 2,827. The data also show substantial differences between states, with several northeastern states and smaller Union Territories having fewer than 100 charging stations.
Bengaluru Remains the Major EV Charging Hub
A large share of Karnataka’s charging infrastructure is concentrated in Bengaluru, India’s major technology and automotive hub. However, the network is gradually expanding into Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities, improving charging accessibility beyond the state capital.
Experts attribute Karnataka’s 6805 EV charging stations partly to the state’s early policy initiatives, particularly its proactive 2017 Electric Vehicle Policy. The framework helped establish an early foundation for EV adoption and charging infrastructure.
₹153.10 Crore Approved for 1,571 More Chargers
The charging network is set for further expansion under the central government’s PM E-DRIVE scheme. An additional ₹153.10 crore has been cleared for Karnataka to deploy 1,571 new EV chargers, potentially strengthening connectivity across more locations.
However, the Ministry of Heavy Industries clarified that centralized data on the number of fast and slow charging stations is not maintained.
Transport expert M.N. Srihari said Karnataka’s extensive charging network, particularly in Bengaluru, can help build consumer confidence. He also stressed the need for better interoperability, standardized charging tariffs, and real-time information about charger availability.
With Karnataka has 6805 EV charging stations already installed and thousands more planned, the state is positioning itself as one of India’s key hubs for electric mobility infrastructure.
