In a significant move to accelerate the transition toward zero-emission transportation, the UK government has announced a major funding initiative, with the UK awards $510 million to Tata’s Agratas, taking center stage. The investment, amounting to approximately £380 million ($509.54 million), has been granted to Agratas—the battery arm of the Tata Group.
Strengthening EV Battery Production in the UK
The funding is part of a broader £470 million government-backed package managed by the Advanced Propulsion Centre (APC). This initiative aims to boost domestic EV battery manufacturing and strengthen supply chains critical for zero-emission vehicles. With this step, the UK awards $510 million to Tata’s Agratas to reinforce its commitment to a cleaner automotive future.
Britain’s Largest Gigafactory in Somerset
Agratas is currently developing what is expected to become Britain’s largest EV battery gigafactory in Somerset. The facility is projected to have a production capacity of around 40 gigawatt-hours, positioning the UK as a competitive player in global battery manufacturing. Notably, the UK awards $510 million to Tata’s Agratas to ensure the successful establishment of this large-scale project.
Supporting Automakers and Creating Jobs
The Somerset gigafactory is set to primarily supply batteries to Jaguar Land Rover, while also potentially serving other automakers in the future. This development is expected to generate thousands of jobs and stimulate economic growth. UK Industry Minister Chris McDonald emphasized that such investments create the right conditions for innovation, employment, and industrial expansion.

Originally proposed by the Department for Business and Trade, the grant highlights the UK’s strategic push toward sustainable mobility.
