Bengaluru witnessed an unprecedented milestone in its electric mobility journey as 13000 EVs were registered in Bengaluru in a day, marking one of the highest single-day numbers ever recorded in the city. This dramatic rise in registrations, especially on March 31, highlights how policy changes, fuel concerns, and growing EV awareness are collectively reshaping consumer choices.
A Record-Breaking Day for EV Registrations
On March 31, more than 13,000 electric vehicles were registered across 11 RTO offices in Bengaluru. A significant majority of these belonged to the two-wheeler category, underlining the strong push toward affordable and efficient personal mobility solutions.
This extraordinary surge has also boosted the city’s daily EV registration average, which has risen by nearly 400 per cent. Since January 2026, Bengaluru has been registering around 267 EVs per day, making the 13000 EVs registered in Bengaluru in a day even more remarkable.
Why the Sudden Rush? Tax Policy Changes Play a Key Role?
The biggest trigger behind this last-minute rush was the implementation of the Motor Vehicles Tax (Amendment) Act from April 1. Buyers fast-tracked their purchases to benefit from the previous tax exemptions before the new lifetime tax structure kicked in.
Under the revised system:
- EVs priced up to ₹10 lakh now attract 5% lifetime tax
- EVs between ₹10 and ₹25 lakh attract 8% tax
- EVs priced above ₹25 lakh attract 10% tax
Previously, almost all EVs except premium models enjoyed a lifetime road-tax exemption.
Many buyers, like Amogh Rajat, rushed to register their vehicles on March 31 to avoid additional taxes, contributing to the milestone of 13,000 EVs registered in Bengaluru in a single day.
Rising Fuel Prices & Global Uncertainty Add Momentum
Beyond tax changes, the surge also reflects growing anxiety over fuel availability and rising petrol–diesel prices. The ongoing Middle East conflict has disrupted global supply chains, prompting more consumers to shift toward EVs for stability and cost savings.
EV Growth Spreads Across Karnataka
The trend is not limited to Bengaluru. Karnataka recorded 54,379 new EV registrations between January and March, compared to just over 35,000 in the same period last year—an impressive 40% growth.
March alone saw 24,000 EVs registered statewide, with Bengaluru contributing more than half, including the landmark 13000 EVs registered in Bengaluru in a day.
A Clear Transformation in Urban Mobility
The spike in EV registrations signals a broader behavioral shift. Bengaluru’s traffic congestion, improved charging infrastructure, and home-charging convenience are driving widespread EV adoption.
With supportive policies, better infrastructure, and rising fuel concerns, electric vehicles are rapidly becoming the preferred choice for both personal and commercial mobility in the city.
