BMW has officially introduced a new chapter in its electric mobility journey with the launch of its first Neue Klasse-based electric SUV. The latest model showcases cutting-edge technology, improved efficiency, and impressive performance. One of the biggest highlights is that BMW’s iX3 EV packs powerful performance, long driving range, and ultra-fast charging capabilities, making it one of the most advanced electric SUVs in its segment.

First Neue Klasse Electric SUV

The 2026 BMW iX3, internally known as NA5, is the first production vehicle built on BMW’s revolutionary Neue Klasse platform. This new architecture focuses on efficiency, sustainability, and next-generation electric performance.

The SUV features BMW’s sixth-generation eDrive technology combined with an advanced 800-volt electrical system, enabling faster charging and better energy efficiency. Compared to its predecessor, the new iX3 represents a major technological leap.

At the heart of the vehicle is a 108.7 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that uses newly developed cylindrical cells. These cells deliver around 20% higher energy density, allowing the SUV to travel significantly farther on a single charge.

Powerful Performance and Long Driving Range

Performance is another area where BMW’s iX3 EV packs serious capability. The launch version, called the iX3 50 xDrive, comes with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system producing 463 hp (345 kW) and 475 lb-ft of torque.

This impressive power allows the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in just 4.9 seconds, while independent tests have even recorded 4.59 seconds.

The driving range is equally impressive. On the EPA cycle, the SUV can deliver approximately 644 km (400 miles) on a full charge, while the WLTP rating goes up to around 805 km (500 miles), making it ideal for long-distance travel.

Ultra-Fast Charging with 800V Technology

One of the most advanced aspects of the vehicle is its fast-charging capability. Thanks to the 800-volt system, BMW’s iX3 EV packs extremely rapid charging speeds of up to 400 kW using DC fast chargers.

With this setup, the SUV can add around 370 km of driving range in just 10 minutes. A typical 10% to 80% charge takes roughly 21 minutes, making long road trips far more convenient.

The EV also supports bidirectional charging, including Vehicle-to-Load (V2L), Vehicle-to-Home (V2H), and Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G), allowing the car to power devices, homes, or even supply electricity back to the grid.

Futuristic Interior and Smart Technology

Inside the cabin, BMW introduces an advanced digital experience called Panoramic iDrive. This system projects essential driving information across the entire width of the windshield through a panoramic head-up display.

The dashboard is complemented by a large 17.9-inch central touchscreen, providing access to infotainment, navigation, and vehicle controls.

Another key innovation is the “Heart of Joy” control unit, which integrates drivetrain management, braking, and energy recuperation into one intelligent system, delivering the responsive driving feel BMW is known for.

Practical Design and Utility

Beyond performance and technology, the SUV is also designed for everyday practicality. BMW’s iX3 EV packs generous storage space, offering 520 liters of cargo capacity, which can expand up to 1,750 liters when the rear seats are folded.

Additionally, the vehicle includes a front trunk (frunk) for extra storage. The iX3 is also capable of towing up to 1,996 kg, making it suitable for trailers and outdoor equipment.

For highway driving, the SUV includes Highway Assistant, which allows hands-free driving at speeds up to 137 km/h, improving comfort during long journeys.

Pricing, Production, and Availability

Production of the new electric SUV will take place at BMW’s Debrecen plant in Hungary, a facility designed to operate without fossil fuels. Around 30% of the vehicle’s materials are recycled, highlighting BMW’s commitment to sustainability.

The starting price is around $60,000 (approximately ₹49 lakh), positioning it competitively against rivals such as the Porsche Macan Electric. BMW also plans to introduce more affordable single-motor variants in the future.

Production begins in late 2025, with European deliveries starting in spring 2026 and U.S. availability expected in summer 2026.
